Wait for it, Summer is coming, maybe by (June 20–22). It only last 3 months, you got to jump right in, or you just might miss it.

You can always tell first time tourists here in San Diego. During the summer they go to the beach, it is sunny and warm so they jump in the ocean and jump right back out!! The Pacific Ocean is much colder than either the Atlantic or the Gulf. Perfect time here is after Labor Day. All the tourists are gone, its still sunny and warm, and the near shore surface waters of the ocean have warmed up.

When swimming in Lake Michigan, a good wetsuit isn’t an option!

Convinced an uncle one exceptional warm Spring day to jump into the lake…he said „you first.“ So I had to go in and pretend it was warm enough for swimming. Not sure who pranked who, but he did go in…

Physics tip… even tho the sun is out and the air has warmed up, it takes a LOT more energy to warm up water.

I remember a story from a now disgraced comedian who described a dip in a lake up north while on their honeymoon. He jumped in the lake which turned out to be ice cold and said he turned into a giant goosepimple. When he recovered, he told his wife, “Come on in, honey. The water’s fine!”

Living in New England, I prefer lakes to the ocean. The water is warmer, and there are no huge waves, rip currents, or sharks!

If the sun is warm and it’s not too windy, you get into the water till your lips turn blue (it doesn’t take long) then get out and sun yourself till you’re warm enough to do it again.I use to swim in lake Erie like that – water temp was about 55 degrees.

When I visited Virginia Beach a few years ago I had never stepped foot in the Atlantic Ocean being from the West Coast. The water there was as warm as bath water which I couldn’t believe would be so warm. I can affirm the Pacific is cold
