My father was born in 1922 (we are Italians) and fought against nazi and fascists from 1943 to 1945 as a Partigiano .I have always been very proud of him.
I think I still have my father’s pea jacket from his days during WWII on the Aleutian Islands. But, I doubt I could ever get into it. He was a little shorter than me, and a lot thinner.
Found out after my grandfather died that he served in WWII, though only at the very end due to his age. But I already knew about his siblings’ service and sacrifice to our country. His older brother was killed when the captain of the destroyer he was on turned in front of an aircraft carrier and was sunk.
No doubt. The greatest generation in the greatest conflict the world had ever seen. However, don’t forget those who fought and died in conflicts that didn’t get the praise and glory. Also, say a prayer for those who died in conflicts and service in those wars and missions that had no public names and got no glory (if there ever is glory in war). I truly believe that God has a special place in Heaven for soldiers that died in combat……
My dad was a radio operator in the Coast Guard in WWII. He was at Normandy, Iwo Jima, Okinowa. Didn’t talk much about any of it. My uncle was at the Battle of the Bulge. My cousin says she has a Nazi flag that he took.

I still have my father’s medals from WW II. He was a Lancaster bomber pilot who flew many missions. I am here because he survived every one.

Thanks for the tribute Chip. While I served and survived, it’s always good to pay tribute to those that didn’t.
Now sorry to be a wet blanket folks but saying happy memorial day just doesn’t seem right. It’s like saying happy death day.
