I used to be amazed when the voice over for medicine commercials go on and on about the possible side affects.

I want a new drug…

It’s only a side effect when it does something you don’t want. In reality, it’s all just “effects.”

Sudden explosive diarrhea

The ailment won’t kill you, but the side effects will. There was an ad for a simple ailment where the drug had a side effect of “possible death”. Excuse me, but I’ll stick with the ailment, thank you very much!

If you die, call your doctor immediately.

Side effects may include: nausea, vomiting, water weight gain, lower back pain, receding hairline, eczema, seborrhea, psoriasis, itchy chafing clothing, liver spots, blood clots, ringworm, excessive body odor, uneven tire wear, pyorrhea, gonorrhea, diarrhea, halitosis, scoliosis, loss of bladder control, hammertoes, the shanks, low sperm count, warped floors, cluttered drawers, hunchback, heart attack, low resale value on your home, feline leukemia, athlete’s foot, head lice, club foot, MS, MD, VD, fleas, anxiety, sleeplessness, drowsiness, poor gas mileage, tooth decay, split ends, parvo, warts, unibrow, lazy eye, fruit flies, chest pains, clogged drains, hemorrhoids, dry heaving, and sexual dysfunction.”

There are some drugs where if you read the potential side effects, you’d wonder why anyone would want to take it in the first place. All about probabilities.

Most drugs are tested on white males between the ages of 25 and 40. For everyone else, they are “off label.”

This first thing my wife does when I am given a new medication, is to go to her medical site download, the “rap sheet” on the drug and print it our. Some are dozens of pages long.

We are now engaged in a “discussion” about the medications I am on. I was perfectly healthy and then had a cardiac event. The doctors did a catheterization and declared that my heart is in perfect physical condition. Nonetheless, they put in a pacemaker/defibrillator mainly because my insurance would cover it, not because they thought I needed it.

They also put me on a bunch of new medications and doubled a couple of others because that’s what the book said to do. My bloodwork was OK before these changes, so they are fixing a problem I didn’t have.

Because then they can come up with another medication to buy to counter the negative side effects from the current prescription

The biggest negative side effect is litigious. Most of the side effects listed are rare, but law requires listing them. Every drug, including homeopathic, has some side effect. A qualified healthcare provider determines the benefits outweigh the risks.

Sildenefil was originally meant to treat angina. It had a ‘side effect’ which led to it being marketed as viagra. Though whether she would consider that a positive, a good thing, is up for discussion.
