When I worked for Radio Shack, (loooooong time ago) the store computer refused to boot up one morning. I called tech support in Texas and they advised “one medium fist hit on the right front corner” of the machine. Evidently, the hard drive would “freeze” overnight while turned off and needed to be joggled into spinning up.
Way back in the days when 20MB was a big hard drive and a Mac Plus was a big deal, I taught at a college in upstate NY. A colleague couldn’t get theirs to boot so I summoned my best impression of a Southern Baptist minister (I’m English so you can guess how wonderful THAT was), said “Mai chiald ewe SHAYL be whowle!!” and flicked it smartly with my finger. From then on they had no further problems, and as far as I know is working still. So don’t knock knocking hardware…
On a similar note, our router refused to power on one day. Nothing was working until my husband decided to use a higher voltage power supply and the device started smoking. After that it has worked perfectly for a month. I guess we just needed to let the magic smoke out of the device.
I heard that when the first mac computers came out. the instructions given for when they froze up was to pick them up about 2 inches and then drop them to unstick the hard drive.
