What an idiot she is to miss such an opportunity. If my mother had asked me what I wanted to eat for dinner I’d have made a list. Can we have fried chicken on Monday, pizza on Tuesday, hamburgers on Wednesday… etc….

I just wouldn’t call her to the table when the food is ready—she can cook her own ! ! ! !

Just being “here” is more of a hindrance than help, but what do you expect from a tween.

I’d have never lived to my next birthday had I been that snarky to my Mom. She would have let me starve to death, or just killed me on the spot to save on more aggravation… and in the 60’s she would have got away with it.

When we were young we were expected to help PREPARE the dinner, pick the beans and tomatoes, etc. and wash the dishes!

When we were growing up our mom was of the “Hunger Makes The Best Sauce” school. If we didn’t eat what was served for dinner she wouldn’t say anything. When we complained about being hungry at 8pm she would say, “This is not a restaurant, breakfast is at 6a, I suggest you not be so picky then.”

Put any of those in front of her, and if she doesn’t eat them, she doesn’t eat!

Embarrassed? No, you’re not embarrassed yet. In your short life, you’ve provided me with almost infinite things to bring up to embarrass you. So, shape up before I open the embarrassment horde at the top of my voice. And oh, look! The feminine hygiene aisle. Let me ask you about your preferences in a voice they can hear at check-out. “Then, we’ll go see if we can find a deodorant powerful enough to work on you.”

Just ignore her, Val, and tell her to be thankful she has food on the table.

This is why providing “menus” to young children is poor training for later. You’re the parent. Choose nutritious foods, so the children will develop good eating habits.

Teach her to cook. I started cooking dinners at 8 years old. My mom was sick a lot.

Mom never asked us – but since I was picky eater (though at 95 she does not remember me being so) there was always the peanut butter sandwich alternative for dinner, despite the fact that from 1st grade through 9th grade I had a half sandwich of same for lunch every day. (One day when I was in junior high she decided I needed more to eat and must be hungry – sent me a whole sandwich – I brought half of it back home.)

Before Covid husband had us eating almost every lunch and dinner out or taking in (not due to my cooking – one of the things he liked about me was my cooking – better than his mom’s) and I don’t like eating out in general. During Covid – after we managed to buy food as little in house since we ate out/took in – I went back to eating peanut sandwiches for lunch – whole sandwiches now as husband would not put up with me eating only half a sandwich “you’ll get yourself sick eating that little”.
