Because there are about 2 billion potholes in the U.S. and maybe 20,000 speed bumps.
The speeding got so bad in my Pasadena neighborhood that six-inch-high speed bumps were installed. Unfortunately, there was an off-road vehicle shop at the corner. Word quickly got out. Off-road enthusiasts would come from miles around to roar through the neighborhood and bounce over the speed bumps.
Many speed bumps have been in place for a long period. But fixing a pothole would require fresh asphalt, which is a petroleum based product, which many think is a no-no, “bad for the climate”, “by happy they are paved at all”.
Speed Bumps, Speed Dips. One has a bigger budget. Don’t you sometimes get the feeling that potholes are sponsored by the shops that replace your car’s universal joints?
If government stayed out of the road building business, the roads would last a lot longer. They would probably be stone or coated steel gratings, or perhaps a glass alloy for a fancy location.

Speed bumps come out of the capital account, filling potholes out of the current account. Two different buckets.

A Plugger also wonders why an asphalt speed bump lasts forever and an asphalt filled pot hole lasts only a mont or two.

Speed bumps are supposed to act as traffic calmers by slowing us down, but they make the drivers I see angrier, not calmer.

Here’s one creative tactic to get pot holes filled in. Google headline: Pot holes finally filled in – only after locals painted phalluses around them.

The newer parking lot speed bumps seems to have been designed based on the British carrier launch hump for Harriers.
