I use to drive a cab in the South Florida area and dropped a fare off at a manison on Palm Island (Al Capone had his winter home there). I quoted the fare to be $9.40 and the passenger replied: “You have been so nice why don’t I make $9.50 instead.” I politely turn her down.
She did advertised $3… and the extea dollar is a 33% tip. Unfortunately this isn’t turning out like she thought it would. Hopefully her next client will be more generous or she may have to raise her prices!
When my dad explained tipping to me when I was a child (family of accountants – lots of childhood discussions on financial matters) he explained to me that only employees are tipped – business owners/self-employed people are not. As the business owner – she should not be tipped at all.
I worked in a local department store and was once offered a tip and turned it down. My parents had taught that one does not tip a sales person. My husband who worked in a unrelated department store was once offered a tip also – he turned it down as in his mind it might be a trick from the store to see what he would do.
