Actually, we have a ladder for fish in Gettysburg, SD on the Missouri River. Salmon do not naturally spawn here, so they had to manufacture something to make them feel at home. From the SD GFP: ’The Whitlock Bay Salmon Station is located along the shores of Lake Oahe at Whitlock Bay, 18 miles west of Gettysburg near West Whitlock Recreation Area. The salmon station is made up of a concrete fish ladder, concrete raceways and a building where artificial spawning takes place."
Over fishing, blockages, water temperature change and pollution have reduced the salmon population, fish ladders help build it back up faster. More changes being made but the runs in the Fall are just so reduced from when I moved to my area in the early 2000’s.
Way back in 2006, in Rootstown, Ohio, there is a school now called NEOMED (Northeast Ohio Medical University – should have left it the old name) where they sold shirts about a football team that had “Walking Whales” and the slogan was “We Got Legs”. On the back it had a schedule of a football team “The Fighting Natans” with a schedule of teams they played. I cannot find a picture of the shirt, but the shirt I am referring to has on the front NEOUCOM Football with the slogan “We Got Legs” with a picture of a whale with legs and on the back it had a schedule for the football games and the school names were hilarious.

Great idea!!! That way they can conserve their energy to spawn instead of using it trying to leap up to the next level!!

There really is such a thing as fish ladders, I think located at dams. They don’t look like that though.

It gives them additional traction, more than slippery rocks. It’s the difference between life and death of a species.
