Michael wouldn’t just be easier to ask if you could go to your friends house and play in the sprinklers.
On second thought way to go dad.. Hope you enjoy sleeping on the couch.
If she wants to avoid the crossed wires, she’s got to let him know what she told Mike. Otherwise, it was Dad’s innocent suggestion. Besides, she never gave Mike a reason other than “because.”
John did nothing wrong. What he said made sense. But if Michael is honest (and he won’t be) he’ll say mom told him he couldn’t play in the sprinkler. Then John should go discuss it with Elly. They need to be united even if they’re wrong. I still say all of them should play in the sprinkler together because it’s so much fun and would make a great family activity.
Wasn’t the case here, but sometimes adults have very good reasons that they can’t explain to children. For instance, a lot of the unfortunate reasons have to do with high risk of abductions and mugging in certain areas after dark (m13 activity in the area). We don’t want to explain that in detail. (We tried explaining “abduction” to one child, and the result was many months of nightmares - never do that again. But then they never questioned “stay with us” orders after that.)
From a Mom’s perspective, sometimes the reason is that i just don’t want to deal with the effort and mess that the activity generates.
For example, I hate to go to the pool. Other than the fact that I don’t like the water myself, getting 2 kids into swimsuits, putting sunscreen on them, getting all the floats and stuff that are needed to keep my kids from drowning, going there, not relaxing while I’m there, coming back and cleaning it all up is EXHAUSTING!
But you can’t explain all that to a kid, so sometimes the answer is just “No, not today. Let’s go do something else”

If Elly sees what John put the sprinkler for Michael to play in, she will throw in a fit!

Oh no. Sounds like John’s gonna get it with Ellie once he and Michael are caught.
Maybe Michael should get an ankle monitor as seen in today’s “Bleeker.”

Snort - my mom never used “because” - her mom had tried it and it never worked on her so she knew it wouldn’t work on me (she’s right).

Same here, no meant no and because was end the of the discussion.

“Because I said so” never worked on me and still doesn’t. Has made a lot of bosses mad at me.
And I have never used it on anyone else. It has that ring of “Nobody could ever know better than I”.

Meh, Elly didn’t have a good reason to say no anyhow.
