I did that once running. The branch was about 5’8" over the ground. I’m 5’11". I was looking down at the uneven surface of the trail and the bill of my hat blocked my view of that height. It happened again on the same tree, that time drawing blood. I sent the coordinates to the park service and they cut off the branch.
Way, way back in time, before mountain bikes, I took my and the kids coaster bikes and replaced the front sprockets with very small sprockets. Basic low gear set-up for hill climbing. We went trail riding, much to the displeasure of some hikers. It was great fun. On the downhill runs though, coaster brakes over heat and the grease runs out of the bearings. Of course me, the adult, had the biggest load. I ended up having to carrying my disabled bike out. Eventually the kids got “string-ray” bikes and my task was maintenance. So long ago…..
Another example of foolish ego. I know of a guy who’s front fork broke riding like an idiot he sustained a neck injury and is now paralyzed from the neck down.
For those who don’t know, the Virginia Creeper trail is a 17 mile, mostly downhill, bike trail. You can take your own bike or rent one from the outfitters who will carry you up to the top. It’s a very nice, not too difficult bike ride.
I used to live in Marin County where people will drive 30 miles to wilderness area to go ride a bicycle on the wrong side of the road at 30 miles an hour downhill on a blind curve. Go figure. (and watch out for them)

Well, to be fair, that could’ve happened to a deer with big antlers. Then again, nah.
