Mike is close with the answer. The tradition of making noise on New Year’s Day has its origins in ancient China, where fireworks were used to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune. Not really paganism unless you consider Buddhism or Confucianism to be pagan.
From Lynn’s Comments: Little things like Weed removing his glasses while he speaks (panels 6-8), made these characters come to life. Rather than have a static pose, I wanted to put everything into motion.
We have a CD called “Meowy Christmas”. It’s Christmas songs done with cats (kind of like the Barking Dogs “Jingle Bells”, except with cats). They also do “Auld Lang Syne”. We also had cats, but they didn’t mind the CD. One year, right at midnight on New Year’s, we cranked that song. One of our neighbors, who was a friend, came running up to our apartment, yelling at us: “What are you doing to your poor cats???”
Well …. Out with the “Old” and here’s to the “New.” Drink responsibly this Tuesday, and drive safely. The World’s a nicer place with you all in it … Peace.

It’s to drive away the monster threatening to eat the sun and end the world.

A tune from Zoe Mulford called Welcome in Another Year is pretty nice. You can hear it on YouTube

It’s unfortunate that making loud noises on New Year’s Eve does not drive away the evil spirits. Or if it does, they return as swiftly as they left.

And thus begins the strip-long tradition of celebrating New year’s Eve in the room over Gordo’s garage.
