    Amen, brother. I had a friend who was in combat in Europe, got his hearing damaged from a nearby blast, was a POW and by the early 1950s started a machine shop with two other men but soon became the sole operator for about a total of 50 years. He worked hard even into his seventies and was taking a less active role by 80. That man lived to 100 years and 3 months. I saw him just days before he passed. He was bedding down for the night when we said our goodbyes for the night; he kissed me on the cheek and I returned the compliment. As I was walking toward the exit I had a deep quiet feeling that said “What if this is the last time I see Ed ?” His son called me the day after he passed. A very dear friend who took personal interest in the men working for him. He cosigned for our then new welder to be able to buy the trailer, helped another guy who as an ex employee got in dutch with the law and worked out where I could stay in that studio apt., that was built as part of a building expansion in the 1960s. He had been good to others in a variety of ways.

    I remember when my Dad was deemed 4F. My mother cried. I nstead of combat he was put in charge of building airplane run ways because he was a cement Contractor. He got orders to build a runway at Hickam Field in Honolulu, but the attack on Pearl Harbor stopped that assignment. And possibly saved his life.

    From yesterday’s comments to daleandkristen who said, "Miranda James writes The Cat in the Stacks mysteries! I’m currently on #9, Claws For Concern.

    Diesel is a young Maine C o o n cat who weighs @40 lbs. His human takes him almost everywhere: to work with him at the library/college archives, restaurants, home visits, etc."

    I have been reading a LOT of library books this year. I was sort of looking for a new series of books to read, and this sounds interesting. So, I checked with my library and they have these books (maybe not in my local library, but through the LinkCat, I have access to books from 50 libraries). I can even get them in large print! So, as soon as I get near the end of the book I’m currently reading, I will be placing a hold on book one of this series, “Murder Past Due”. I’m looking forward to trying these out. I do love Lilian Jackson Braun’s Cat Who… mysteries and I read all of them, I own all but 4 of her books. Of course, there won’t be any more Cat Who books because the author died several years ago.

    In Flanders’ field the poppies blow

    Between the crosses, row on row,

    That mark our place, and in the sky,

    The larks, still bravely singing fly,

    Scarce heard amid the guns below.

    We are the dead: short days ago,

    We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset’s glow

    Loved and were loved, and now we lie in Flanders Fields.

    Take up our quarrel with the foe:

    To you, from failing hands,l we throw the torch;

    Be yours to hold it high.

    If ye break faith with us who die, we shall not sleep

    Though poppies grow in Flanders’ fields.

    Well, it’s 7:00 somewhere. You know what? I miss when we were able to post links to pictures and videos. I miss being able to type “Great pictures today. :)” I also miss when people wouldn’t post political comments here. On another note, saw eight varied thrushes and four juncos while out walking today.
