…or Lobster Thermidor aux crevettes with a Mornay sauce, served in a Provençale manner with shallots and aubergines, garnished with truffle pâté, brandy, and a fried egg on top, and Spam.
Many years ago – back when emails arrived at a more reasonable pace – I had an audio clip that triggered every time an e-mail arrived. It was from the movie The Quest for the Holy Grail. It was the sound of the arrow flying through the air and hitting Lancelot’s squire who – as he’s falling – then says “Message for you sir!”
Sometimes this strip makes the early 00s feel a lot longer ago than it really was. One reason is that, in those days, people really did seem more likely to make pop culture references that went back much farther than we do now. (The Monty Python sketch in question was older on the day this strip first ran than the strip is today.)
I know the comics have always attracted readers with old souls, old bodies, or both. But I remember that, in the 90s, lots of children’s cartoons regularly made deep cuts going as far back as the 40s, and expected kids more or less to get it.

Well, considering that that’s why spam is in fact called spam…

Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse
When you’re chewing on life’s gristle
Don’t grumble, give a whistle
And this’ll help things turn out for the best
And
Always look on the bright side of life
Always look on the light side of life
If life seems jolly rotten
There’s something you’ve forgotten
And that’s to laugh and smile and dance and sing
When you’re feeling in the dumps
Don’t be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle, that’s the thing
And
Always look on the bright side of life
(Come on)
Always look on the right side of life
For life is quite absurd
And death’s the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow
Forget about your sin
Give the audience a grin
Enjoy it, it’s your last chance anyhow
So always look on the bright side of death
A just before you draw your terminal breath
Life’s a piece of sh!t
When you look at it
Life’s a laugh and death’s a joke, it’s true
You’ll see it’s all a show
Keep ‘em laughin’ as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you
