1969, 5th grade teacher had one and seeing that, I wanted one. Mom got one for me, teacher didn’t like the idea of a 5th grade student using a fountain pen.
Fountain pens are only classy if you know how to use one otherwise they are messy, leave out parts of the letter or bleed together, etc. In addition you need to pay more attention to the paper you use with a fountain pen than a typical ball point. IF you know what you are doing, however, fountain pens are indeed classier.
Not even Opal is discriminatory when it comes to defining people by the jobs they find themselves doing. Someone’s got to take care of our garbage and binmen deserve as much respect as someone like a highcourt judge or dignitory. More infact!
“It’s for our garbage man. I doubt he’ll care.” How casually we diminish the value of a human being based solely on their profession! But I ask you—what defines the worth of a person? Is it their job title, or is it the dignity with which they perform their work, the contribution they make to our society?
It’s about respect. It’s about recognizing that every person, no matter their station in life, deserves acknowledgment, kindness, and appreciation. To reduce someone’s worth to the job they do is an injustice not only to them but to the very fabric of our humanity.
Let us reject the notion that some professions—or people—matter less. Let us show gratitude to the garbage collectors, the janitors, the delivery drivers, the people whose work is vital but often invisible. Because, I tell you, their contribution to our world is nothing short of extraordinary.
Let us never again belittle another human being for the work they do. For it is in respecting the least among us that we honor the best within us.
Has anyone ever given a Christmas card to their garbage collector ? In all my years I never met them. Maybe someone like a house cleaner or even a delivery service but not for garbage collector
Our garbage pickup just became mostly automated. They pull up with the truck, an arm extends and grabs the container, etc. We’ve been told they’ll no longer pickup anything placed next to the container. So how am I supposed to leave a tip and plate of homemade cookies?
“I’ll have you know I went to school with Charlie Brown and he gave me this fountain pen when he got fed up with it. Threw it at me, actually. I’ll treasure it forever!”
I took a calligraphy class long ago, and it gave me empathy for Charlie’s struggles…
I love using my calligraphy pen with the 1.5 nib, fast enough for my purposes since I retired. When I worked I did prefer Pentel’s EnerGel when it came out over any other brands. My Mom did give Christmas cards to the garbage man and she would give cash, handing it to him personally.

He wouldn’t care as long as you put cash in the card.

Cheap shot against hard working people who collect our trash. They’re working a lot harder and doing more important work than Brian Crane.

It’s the thought that counts. But who uses fountain pens anymore? Then again Earl probably still has a Rolodex.

Well, then use your radium and sharpen the pen in your lips first, like those Radium Girls.
