Bravo to Hillburn for getting it right. From a blog post years ago:
OK, we’re going to go over this one last time…
It’s “Colly Birds”, not “Calling Birds”. What IS a “Calling Bird”, anyway?
Go ahead and pronounce it, “in egg-SHELL-cious Dei-Oh”. It’s easier to say, is actually proper, and doesn’t refer to the Minnesota Wild’s Arena Sponsor.
And…
It’s not a song about a bunch of “Merry Gentlemen”, it goes “God Rest Ye Merry, (comma) Gentlemen.” It’s all about the punctuation.
You won’t think it’s so romantic when all those birds start making all kinds of racket. Not to mention the mess they’ll make all over the place with their “fertilizer.”

With a little thought, “Pearls Before Swine” could turn this into a multi-panel Sunday cartoon.

Heard a version from somewhere in the UK where it was ‘canary birds’ which doesn’t really fit the melody.
