A lot of things don’t seem to make a lot of cents … but a lot of things do seem to cost a lot of cents more than what they used to.

Petroleum companies do better with addition than subtraction.

In 1950, a gallon of gas in the U.S. cost 27 cents. That’s the equivalent of $3.63 in today’s dollars (according to the CPI Inflation Calculator).

Gas prices near me went up 50 cents since Monday. What happened recently that might cause this?

I can’t help but think it would be more cost-efficient if they just pegged it at a calculated price instead of all this change. I think it cost the more to keep changing the price than just leaving it.

In Hawaii for a couple of weeks, gas back in the PNW was just under three dollars there. Prices here were higher by dollars, not dimes!

I think it is because price rises at the speed of light but falls at the speed of sound … or something equally logical.

Huh. I bought eggs yesterday – they cost about the same as the last time I bought them a few weeks ago. I didn’t need gas because I filled up Saturday, but I did drive past the gas station. It was up $0.20 a gallon since Saturday.

    So, are we great yet??

There are too many commodity auctions with too few buyers and sellers. It is more like collaborative price fixing.

On the news last night: U.S. crude oil production established a new record in August 2024. An average of 13.4 million barrels per day (b/d) of crude oil was produced in the United States during August 2024, a new record according to data from our Petroleum Supply Monthly. They said we produce much more than we use, but then saw another statement later on that we still buy a lot from Canada. Hopefully the folks in charge are getting a lot more for what they’re selling of ours to other countries to make this all work in our favor, but I wouldn’t hold my breath on that coming true.
