In survival school they taught us. Take a compass reading. Then find a indefinable object there then walk to it. If you have a companion send the companion ahead and direct him or her stand in the right spot.

On the other hand, if you are just trying to find your way out of the woods, go downhill. Eventually, you will find water. Keep following the water. Eventually you will find civilization.

At least now they have shade.
