A male dog for the tree; a female dog for the grass.

Used to do that for our dog. He loved being out in winter but was so small he got lost in the snow, so we dug out a circuit of paths around the yard hitting four different trees so he could go in a variety of directions and run till his little legs were too tired.

Perhaps a shrub next to the door, when you want expedite things while you’re wearing just a robe. Perhaps the dog will have mercy on you for a day and put off checking their messages on the tree down the block.

I would think the path to the tree would be direct and then circle it!
