Finally emptied the bird feeder after nothing was eating the seeds. Poured it out onto some upside down tubs and still nothing is touching it. Guess it was just too old. Maybe I’ll pickup a fresh bag this Friday.

I’m always happy to see people taking care of creatures in the environment! I do it myself to a certain extent!

this is why I stopped putting out a bird feeder, the squirrels would just pillage it and as like as not I’d find it knocked to the ground

Let the bird eat first, squirrels. It is a bird feeder, after all!

I got one of those “Droll Yankee Flipper Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder” which spin wildly when a squirrel or heavy bird land on the ring. Works pretty well…but when the birds are not feeding and the squirrels are not getting enough of the feed on the ground, they send a squirrel to go take a 5 or 10 spin around to fling more feed to the ground. It has entertainment value.

That’s pretty much how it happens in my house. The squirrels used to wait for the bird feeder droppings. Now we just buy sunflower seeds for them and now we have bunnies too! If breakfast is late, a squirrel or dove will stare at me through the window. When I fill the bird feeder, I suddenly hear the finches going crazy in the bushes (I swear those little pigs are yelling, “It’s about time!”). I know the naturalists would say to make them find their own food but I live in a concrete jungle and my neighbors use so much fertilizer and pesticides there isn’t much to eat. I love watching my little zoo!

Have you seen the online videos of maggots being removed by kind people from baby birds. Don’t put out birdseed if you see webs or little critters in it. These maggots are called bots. They are deadly to baby birds. Kill the whole nest.

Maybe you should seek an independent wireless hanging stand for the bird feeder on account of all those squirrels!

We rely on Brome Squirrel busters. I’ve got the Squirrel Buster Plus, which allows up to six birds (adjustable) to get seeds simultaneously, but closes shut if anything heavier (like a squirrel or raccoon) gets on the feeder. They’re also guaranteed for life (I’ve had to have many bits replaced after a raccoon decided to jump on it and knock it to the ground.) They also make a great suet feeder which keeps the squirrels from eating your expensive suet. The nice thing about the bird feeder is that while the little birds get their fill, they knock lots of seeds to the ground for the ground feeders and squirrels.
