It’s Sunday back in 1931, so a three-car classics update for the 18th is the best the railway can manage:
Doc’s horse thief isn’t particularly good at his job, and Rick catches him. Looks like we’re due for a hangin’ in Conniption. And Doc’s still stuck with Old Reliable. Shoulda hired Hipshot, he’s a pro’s pro.
The Dirty Duke may not turn out to be a Duke, but now we know he’s not Santa Claus – his name is Xanthus. And whatever his plan is, it involves a local bombshell who it looks like he’s aiming at someone in Gotham. But who, Mr. Livwright? UN Secretary-General Trygve Lie?? Yogi Berra???
Walt, out of the goodness of his heart, decides to drive on out to the dump and check on how Joel’s been doing during this long, cold winter. And maybe find out how he’s doing it, without electricity or heat in that drafty shack of his.
Not liking this at all. Generally, I’d be a purist, saying something like, “He’s been around since the 19th century. That’s not realistic”. But Walt is an institution. A bit of artistic license is definitely allowed and welcome in his case. To paraphrase a battle cry of a different kind that availed itself in the midwest circa 1969, “Free Walt now!!”
Get ready for another Old Comics Home trip, Walt. It might or might not be your last (depending on the status of Jim S. and his Gasoline Alley comic strip contract).
Is this how old comics characters “die”? No coffin, no funeral, no grave-side service? Walt would be missed. And what happens to Gertie? Does she go to work for Skeezix? Does Skeezix become the center of the strip? Does the obnoxious next-generation of kids (and their talking bear!) take over? Guess we’ll see.

What do they have planned for the old guy? Probably at the Old Comics Home he will see long retired fellow comic characters, may be interesting!

Dug out my old ROVER book yesterday and having a great time re-reading it. Jeez,Clovia looked like a real movie star in the 70;’s!!
And thanks to an old strip I saved,I found out when Rover re-encountered his crooked birth mother—1995—and got her sent up for life
