When you’re following an oil tanker as closely as Leroy is it’s often quite difficult to see what’s in front of it. If he didn’t know there was a railroad crossing up ahead he might assume the tanker had no good reason to stop and pull up to go around it.
A couple of days ago, I was at a 3-way stop sign that is also a railroad crossing. The car ahead of me was turning left, and had right of way. The car opposing us blocked their path, then realizing what they had done, stopped—while still in their path and each car kept stopping and starting without either taking the right of way. This whole time, the car in front of me was stuck on the tracks. I hope the driver coming towards us has guilt-ridden flashbacks of that moment for the next 10 years.
