It’s really annoying that this strip has not been updated for several days now. As usual.
Yes, I know, there’s this, that, and the other that keeps the cartoonist from working on it. I really wish, though, that he would either reliably produce this strip and Toby or just end them. This halfway house is no good for anyone.
“Expect a short delay in Barkeater Lake and TOBY, today, folks. I’m trying to rearrange my life to fit into a Brooklyn-sized lifestyle. New strips will appear rather shortly.
Thanks, as always, for your patience and readership.”
Hang in there folks. I’m back in Maine and working on new strips as we type.
I always do my best to get you new comics in a timely manner, but with the move progressing and the renovations on the house in Maine (so we can rent it), it sometimes doesn’t work out.
No need to be “annoyed” that new stuff isn’t up. Life’s too short to worry about four silly frames of jokes.
It’ll all be better soon enough.
I thank you for the patience and continued readership,
CP
P.S. In the future, if you have any questions about updates or the lack thereof, check out my blog and/or follow me on Twitter. I update my progress on there quite often. (the links are on the right of this page)
Come on, give Corey a break. He’s got a lot going on. I rather have quality over quantity. I know when I see something new, I’m going to enjoy it. If you just want something just put out everyday, check out Dick Tracy and see the difference.
Corey: Just ‘unfollowed’ you on Twitter. If you didn’t update so often, we might see if Banks gets served. I know you want to keep your fans up to date, but I think we’d rather see the comics.
just sayin…
I wouldn’t mind seeing some of the early BL strips when you need some extra time to work on other things. You’ve got 10 yrs of material that many people have not seen yet (and I wouldn’t mind seeing again).
A. I end Barkeater Lake for good at the end of October.
B. Starting next Monday, you all get to enjoy the first month of Barkeater Lake from the very beginning, while I paint my house, move all my worldly possessions, rent a place in NYC, rent the house in Maine and stay sane while doing so. I’ll finish up the current story arc over the next five days.
Option A will happen for sure if I don’t get a break, FYI.
There is also no guarantee that things will be 100% better when I come back, but there are no guarantees in life, I suppose.
TOBY and GREENE WITH ENVY will continue with new material for the duration of the break.
I’m putting this out there for you guys to discuss, because you’re the ones who read the comics.
I’ll make my decision on Friday and your comments will help me in that decision.
Nooooo! Don’t leave us desolate!! I can wait forever if that’s what it takes to get more Barkeater Lake! Pay no attention to the naysayers Corey. Listen to the fans who love you!
I don’t think the complaints are so much about what’s out there, but when. Taking a month off may allow me enough time to get ahead, resulting in regular updates.
Last I checked, we were gettin the goodies for free (or 99 cents a month if you signed up for the extras). So, there’s not much room for complaining, particularly when the work, delayed or otherwise, is always so good. If the 4-star restaurant across the street wants to give me free filet mignon, I will take it even if I have to wait a bit to get it.
Also, if this was a once a week Barkeater Lake strip (rather than a daily), you’d check back once a week to read it. That’s what I do. I don’t come here everyday, but just check it every Monday and read what’s there. I’m never disappointed.
Finally, Corey, you need to get paid man. If this strip, which we know you love, is adding to the burden rather than diminishing it, you should pack it up. I would. Maybe run the reruns for a while to see if the revenue stream becomes a revenue river then get back to it. Otherwise, even struggling, talented artists gotta eat. And quaff the occasional beer or ten.
Maybe run the reruns during the week and provide a new Sunday strip each week? That may not be much of a break.
Either way, if there’s more meat on this bone, terrific. If not, I’ve had a good time. You don’t owe me a thing. Thanks for the beer and bacon.
I couldn’t agree more. The not being paid has spun me into a hole of depression where motivation and love of the craft are all but non-existent.
We are toying with idea of a yearly “telethon” where the diff. characters of the strip push for donations over a week’s time…
or, maybe auctioning off actual ad space on backgrounds in the strips, or auctioning appearances in the strip.
One thing is for sure: The production, sale and fulfillment of your own merch is a risk almost not worth taking. If it works, lovely. If it fails, you’re stuck with a bunch of books and shirts you can’t sell and pre-orders you can’t afford to print.
There has to be a better way to make some green off of comics again. I produce FOUR very good comics and I can barely get by.
Don’t seem right, but then again, not much does these days.
I don’t mind having some flashbacks. It would give me something to enjoy while you get life organized. I don’t want to see it end. I really love reading it. I’m also sad another talented person is leaving Maine. Sigh. Keep up the great work and I hope the fools out there see what you are and start paying you.
Corey, I love the idea of having reruns while you get settled. I know moving is stressful etc. I have read BL since the beginning.
You are correct in saying that the naysayers are upset because of the frequency, not the content. The content is great. That is what keeps me coming back.
I know you want to please the public, but to make promises hoping to keep everyone happy, and then not able to keep those promises, is what bothers me the most.
I would be happy if there were just one update a week, like on Monday’s, after the hiatus while you are moving. And reruns on Sundays. I don’t want to see BL disappear completely, you have lots of talent and BL is funny.
Good luck, and thanks for being open to ideas! You have a lot on your plate, I hope you hang in there.
Please say “no” to Option A. Like, others, I’d be happy to see reruns. And, if you run out of reruns, I’m happy to wait for as long as you need between new strips. As ChucksAlterEgo noted, we’re not paying for this (or not paying much), so I don’t see that we have standing to complain.
Take a month off! I love BL. I can do without it while you get settled in a new place and get things rolling. I’m patient, afterall, I’ve stuck with you this long! I’m not giving up on you now!
The vote in my house is 3 out of 3 to take a month off and to try to keep BL going. We love it! More than Get Fuzzy, and Calvin and Hobbes. Of course I really like that guy that writes The Elderberries.
Hey All,
For my part, Please don’t let it come to option”A.” Run some of the old one’s. I’m one of the newer reader’s on the net here but when i found you i had to go back a couple of day’s, then a couple of Week’s, Ended up going to the start of BL. It’s cute, sweet as well as being the funniest strips I’ve seen in a while.
Take some time off, get yourself to gather. Paint the house. We’ll be waiting for you.
My feelings are the same as the last handful of posts. I love Barkeater Lake and would rather see reruns for a month or so while you get settled in NYC. (but leave Whiskey alone so you can get everything done and come back with new Barkeater Lake strips!)
+1 for Option B. I was bummed when I stopped finding BL where I’d been reading it before, and I thought it had been ended altogether then. I’d be even more bummed if it disappears for real, since this time I’d know it was gone for good.
Run some themed series of the old strips. I’d love to see all the CHPMNK Militia panels in a row. And some of the immortal battle between Chuck and Banks (and bacon), some on Banks unusual powers/achievements (flying, substitute physics teacher, football coach, bobsled coach Etc.)
You have a month of Sundays, I’m sure. I could stand to see a month of Sundays, myself, although I can’t speak for others.
Do an original sort of thing once a week if you put out the Sundays daily. Maybe sort of a dating profile for the various characters, to wit:
“Name: Banks; Species : Anthropomorphic Canine; Likes: Bacon, flying, howling at the moon, keeping Chuck out of trouble, particle physics, football; Looking For: Another anthropomorphic dog of the femme variety who can cook bacon. Sample of bacon required.”
“Name: Sabrina Tanzini, deah; Species: Predatory human female; Likes: Vodka, vodka, evil plots, gold-digging, vodka (“Gray Goose, deah”), humiliating her manservant, vodka; Looking for: Billionaire who owns controlling stock in Gray Goose vodka, to exploit.
Each could be done with a little wit and some rather simple artwork which would not be too time consuming. Or another idea entirely, such as drawing the gang as a death metal band, a country band, etc, once weekly.
I thought the auctions for guest appearances in Sunday strips was a creative way to get a little revenue, and everyone got something from it.
I’m ready for a trip down memory lane.Put BL on replay and take a little stress off your life while you move.
I have to get on with my day so I can’t continue reading the comments but if you’re still takin’ votes please post the old strips. I’d love to see how BL started. Good luck with the move & with getting PAID! The Sunday guest strips were awesome but putting ad space in your comic is pretty cool too. Heh, maybe you change the name to Gritty’s instead of Chuck’s =)

Totally understand. Twitter isn’t the time suck, right now. Looking for paying gigs and getting a house ready for the move is.
Clearly, I have failed at my promise to update everyday. Need to find a quick fix for you guys.
I will continue to try and be more regular until I succeed.
Thanks for the comments,
