Hey, if the Mayans were so accurate, what the heck happened to them? And why did they stop at 2012, they run out of room on the stone wheel? And why did they use a wheel for a calendar? They should have been using it to invent the wagon…
This Mayan calendar thing reminds me of when I was four years old and first learned how to read a calendar. I actually did get scared the world would end at midnight on December 31.
The Mayan Long Count didn’t stop at 2012, and they didn’t predict the end of the world or anything else on December 21, 2012. In fact they paid no special attention to that date from all I’ve heard from reputable Mayan specialists.
As for the rest, technical sophistication never stopped a society from dying out. That’s something we ought to remember in our modern world.
@WillardMBaker - according to the experts, the mayan calendar was designed to repeat. They had just never had occasion to repeat the largest cycle.

This is what I’ve been trying to articulate to my friends-thanks for putting it into concise wording!
I would think that the Mayans would indeed dread the coming of 2012 because then they’d have to buy another big stone calendar. Can you imagine flipping through those huge things, trying to find the one whose pictures you like best? And then there’s the agony of taking it home; remember, they hadn’t invented wheels, so no putting it on the roof of the car. And just try hanging that thing on the wall – the nail would come right out! I’m so glad I’m not Mayan.
If people want to entertain themselves with artificial scares, they should go watch a horror movie or ride a rollercoaster and not bother the rest of us.
1787*
Pennsylvania became the second state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.
Since there was only one state before Pennsylvania joined, I wonder what “US stood for.” What did they call the “United States” before the second one joined?
The Mayans probably didn’t go past 2012 because they ran out of time, they ran out of space, or they decided 2012 was just too far away. So glad someone is finally speaking against this “End of the World” nonsense.

Wait until he finds the little extension into January 2010 somewhere in the back. Then he’ll really get confused.

Does Brewster go through this every year? I guess having your mind purged by extraterrestrials every January has some drawbacks.

Just save it until 2012. That’s when the world ends anyway according to the Mayan calendar.

I wonder if this same thing happens if he is eating a box of dates, and he come to the end.
