Andrea—(Honey)—welcome to American culture. “Miller Time” refers to after a hard day’s work when it’s time for a cold beer. Miller’s Beer just happened to come up with that great slogan first… which is great because Millers is a great beer!
Have a blessed Thanksgiving, America. May your day be filled with peace and goodwill plus lots of turkey and pumpkin pie! Just another ordinary Thursday here in South Africa, also wet and cold.
Happy Thanksgiving to all from China. I’ve been here two years now and I am going to have my first turkey tonight in two years. I am so looking forward to it.

Happy Thanksgiving! To those who don’t celebrate it, it’s nice to hear from you, as I always enjoy learning what country the posters on this site are from. Calvin and Hobbes has a lot of universal appeal, except on days like today when it’s hard to figure out the reference to American culture of the past. Here is one of the earlier “Miller Time” commercials. It was made in 1977, and today’s Calvin Hobbes strip is from 1986. By having Calvin describe his exhausting day, Bill Watterson is parodying the style of the earliest Miller Time ads, where a man works all day at a physically demanding job; and then comes Miller Time, where enjoying a cold Miller Beer with friends is his reward for putting in a hard day’s work. Each commercial had the same format but it would describe a different type of job.Click here: Miller Beer Commercial (1977)In 1980 or 1981, comedians Dick Orkin and Bert Burdis did a parody of “Miller Time” commercials on the Tim Conway Show. They were working hard all day under the hot sun, from dawn to dusk, painting the line down the middle of the highway. They kept stopping for “Tiller Time” periodically, and as the day wore on, the line became more and more crooked, until eventually they were painting it in circles and up over cars.
A couple weeks ago here in Tucson, there was a cartoon in the local paper showing a football player limping away (the U of A had a horrible football season) and a basketball player happily running in. The caption was “It’s Miller Time” referring to Sean Miller, the basketball coach, but of course also referencing the old beer ad campaign.
..don’t forget the use of “It’s Miller Time” in the old classic movie, Ghostbusters!…Happy Thanksgiving to all my US neighbors – up in Canada we have Thanksgiving the 2nd Monday in October – and we’re mostly thankful if the snow isn’t flying yet!
Today’s comments are a real geography lesson! Who knew Calvin was beloved by so many people all over the world. We can all be thankful for something no matter where we live, especially since we have such good friends right here on GoComics.
The road to happiness is gratitude. Happy Thanksgiving to Bill Watterson wherever you are, Hobbes, the fun loving readers who never quite grew up, and all those you love. To those who do not celebrate may you find things to be grateful for, and happiness.
“and it got deleted. I’m first to get deleted on the new site. Drinks are on me.” I like that, taken out of context here, your comment didn’t get nuked. As far as the comment it self; Nicely done Sir, nicely done.
Thanks a lot. Now I have yet one MORE must-read strip before I can get anything done. Time to pop a PBR and give thanks; here’s to you, good sir, and your perspicacious commentary and sharp wit.
@Dogsniff: I think what bmonk was trying to say was, suppose somebody before you posted something on the new site but you never saw it because it was already deleted before you went on to do your posting. Then that person would hold the record for being the first person ever deleted on the new site, but you would never know it, and you would assume that you were the first person ever deleted. I hope you appreciate all of my efforts to provide this vital input to try to help burst your balloon. :>)
Hi bmonk. Thanks for replying, but I think bluskies was only kidding by using exaggeration, since Dogsniff can’t physically buy us all a drink. That’s the way I took it.
Saaaaay, you wouldn’t happen to have any Stroh’s beer wouldja?…………No, but I have some nice cool water. >……….NO, no, I really had a taste for some Stroh’s.

When did they stop using that slogan? I’m 38 and can vividly remember it, along with the “Where’s the Beef” that Wendy’s has revived.
