Rabbi Marmelstein, Sam and his wife and two daughters (?), Lizz, Tess and Tracy, Junior, Sparkle, Honeymoon, Joe, Sparkle Jr.—these are readily identifiable. But who is the girl in the back with blonde hair and bangs, and who is guy furthest back/behind her?
That’s a Yiddish saying. Literally, “a blessing on your head.” It can be used in a variety of ways, one of which can be interpreted to mean “thank you.” And I do.
This is the first time that I have attended a Channukah celebration. Glad I could be with such good people. Thank you Mike and Joe for this and for your fine work in 2011. I’m sure that even better things await us in 2012.
For lack of a better word – wow. A few days of touching holiday rememberences, a legendary character restored, thoughtful and artful renderings. 2010 has been a better year in this little corner of the comics through the talents and determination of Joe, Mike and team. Yasher Koyech!
if you and flightsuit ,apparently, disagree with the consensus that today’s strip is so peachy keen, you are not allowed to voice your opinion. How dare you speak up for yourselves! now bow your head and be act pious, and maybe you will be forgiven
Personally, I LIKE these occasional strips showing that Tracy and his cohorts have lives outside of crime fighting. And while I’m not Jewish, I really like seeing Hanukkah being celebrated in a comic strip for once this time of year. This short story arc has been wonderful. GREAT job Mike, Joe, Shelley and Shane!
I shudder to think of what this would have looked like under any of the previous two artists for the strip… The current creative team is a definite change, and for the better I believe. :)
Mike, Joe, Shelley, Shane and Jim should publish an account of their first year at the helm of the Dick Tracy strip. It could stand as a blueprint for how to bring a dying comic strip back to life.
I’m intrigued with the pacing the team has brought to the strip…at first I was annoyed that the threads seemed to wrap up instantly, but now that it’s been a while I’m enjoying the tapestry they’re weaving. All those villains floating around out there, all these side moments…I really thought Dick Tracy was going to fade out forever under Locher, so this has been a great ride.
Happy Channukah to all the Jewish Readers of Dick Tracy!!!
It is good to see this in the comic strips.
My son went to catholic school, so we didn’t have any problems with prayer.
My brother had his boys in the public school system where you can’t make any references to Jesus in the Christmas Concerts.
It is nice to see prayer being shown in the Tracy Family Christmas.
Archie Bunker insulted every religion in the world, but I still remember when the Bunker’s were invited to a Jewish Wedding – Archie said: “Next, I will wearing a Yamaha on my head”!!!!!!
I have the greatest respect for Hanukkah because the story behind it also is part of the prophecy that will happen at the end time. The evil Syrian king, whom the Maccabees overthrew, is the fore runner of the Anti-Christ or Beast. Just as the Syrian king put an idol in God’s Temple in Jerusalem back then, Jesus said the Beast will do the same thing in a future Temple to be rebult.
I know this is a day late, but when I saw this I was floored. What a beautiful moment. It keeps the strip grounded in reality and reminds of the humanity that’s in it.Showing the diversity that’s there.Kudos Mike and Joe!!!!!

Forgive me for saying so, but this little Chanukkah party had better segue into a crime being committed sooner, rather than later.
