This strip is great! A shoot out in a public place! Like when DT blasted away at B.B. Eyes and his boys in the middle of the street in the old days! Dig it!
WOW! SoS plays with a musical pistol in the foreground while Tracy uses an upturned table as a shield against Blinkin’s gunfire in the silhouette background! It’s musical chaos, folks, and Spike Smith would be proud (if he weren’t scared)!
I’m really glad you’re here today Matty ! To see the LONG list of people, all PRAISING the current strip, oddly - the SAME readers who one year ago were TRASHING the content produced by the former Author/Artist.
Ask yourself the question was that work really so SUPERB ? Think you SO described it (?) Was the whole world wrong and you right ?
No color in the daily newspaper, this strip is designed to be in BW for the dailys. Todays strip would look great in the paper. Are you just being a devil’s advocate?
I first read today’s strip in the Chicago Tribune, and it looked great. I remember thinking, “How will GoComics colorists screw this up?” Mostly in panel 3, in my opinion, which was more dramatic in B&W.
“Cocktals for Two” – I love the classic Spike Jones’ version (complete with gunfire).I don’t know if it’ll calm the crowd, but it should distract them from the non-musical mayhem.Team Tracy has topped themselves again!
Good and quick thinking on Spike, Jr’s part. Make the audience think the gunfire is part of the act so they don’t panic and perhaps in their panic get between Tracy and the bad guys.
Where do Putty Puss’s goons get their clothes at? Yesterday it was blue, today it’s purple. Do they change based on the mood of the wearer, like Mood Rings? ;)
But heckling aside, I’m curious to see how this all ends.
Regarding the discussion on how comics look when actually printed in the paper:
I think the problem is the small size. Most dailies have upgraded to the offset printing method by now, and reproduction (at least, that part which the pressmen are able to control) is actually quite good. But if the pre-press department reduces the strips down to an inch before sending the plates to the press, the detail will be lost, no matter what the press operators do Many of the reprint books in my collection suffered the same way – prepress camera work lost detail before they ever went to press..
If there are any bodies as a result of all the gunplay, I hope they take them away. I believe there is still a body on the science museum stage! (No offense to Dick Locher intended).
1) A circulation of 50 newspapers (Having inherited some - 300) - In not ‘representative’ of degraded quality ? A poor guide of assesment ? (Bad science?) when combined with near unanimus – supporting ‘comment’ here ?Can’t recall you identifying exactly what in the strip back then, rated the word SUPERB ?
2) Lemmings ? To follow that trend of thinking. the near unanimous ‘praise’ today from the SAME people may suggest they continue to keep on jumping off cliffs ?Is that what’s being implied here ?
3) Perhaps everyone here needs to take a “time out”, and read the eSkeptic article, to find out why they are so ‘happy’ at being fooled with the current strip (?)
Cocktails for Two was one of the biggest hits of Spike Jones, whom Spike D y k e/Smith was always an affectionate parody of. Here’s a video of his performance:

Not to mention all the insanity provided by the weird wardrobes of most of the people there.

it must be putty, ‘cause jam don’t shake like that!

Yikes! What chaos. Great opportunity for Putty Puss to take on a new disguise. Maybe his current obsession with song lyrics will give him away.

A great tribute to “Spike Jones and the City Slickers:” with Jr’s choice of song.

Spike Jones & The City Slickers ? …coincidental ? … intentional ? … lol … ole PP is looking pretty rough. Did DT fire his weapon in panel three ?
