During the previous iteration of FBoFW, I never got the impression that Elly was so mercurial and irrational. This incarnation grates on my nerves a bit, so I know it’s not just my imagination. Ah well.
It’s a good thing my wife is not Elly. I do my own hair because there’s so little to do. A snip here, a snip there, and I’m done. Of course, when I get talking to myself, I get carried away, and then it’s a snip snip here, a snip snip there, here a snip, there a snip everywhere a snip snip.
Men usually have shorter hair and don’t play with it as much as women. When they get a really bad haircut, it can be terrible. My husband had two such haircuts in our 34 years together – memorably bad! For one, he came out of the barber shop looking like an escaped lunatic (we went straight to another barber who was able to fix that one). The other was a student of his who was learning to cut hair — I hope she improved! She cut it so short there was no fix. Everyday for a month she apologized. But it’s all experiences, what would life be without them?
I had a boyfriend do this once (over react) when I decided I was tired of the style I had and went for something very different. He gave me a very hard time about it for about a week and I kicked him to the curb.
I think John looks OK with it short like that. I also think Elly is rude. She wouldn’t make a comment like that to a friend…..just to her husband, the one person she should support and not make feel like a failure. No wonder the “real” Elly lost him.
The times were different then. A man with a shavetail haircut was not attractive to many women of that age. The only reason some put up with it now is the balding factor.
Wow, that was pretty mean. I can usually find something that I relate to with Elly, even if I would have done it differently, but this time nothing. My husband talks about shaving all of his hair off to hide his bald spot (it’s not really that noticeable), but I don’t think I would like that so I tell him that. But even when he comes home with really short hair (too short for my taste), I don’t say much. It grows back, and it’s better than a tattoo.Take it easy, Elly!
Geez Elly, it WILL grow back. Quickly, too. I’d take it as an opportunity for a little more giggling for a few days. Something makes you mad? Think of his hair and laugh!
you wuss. 52% of the population is female, john. and once you push 50, it gets even more “female”. if everytime a guy gets this garbage he came home reeking of (not her) crotch, either it stops, or it “goes away”.
A haircut can make the crucial difference between finding someone attractive & not being sexually attracted to them. When my ex cut off his long hair for convenience, I no longer found him attractive. The guys commenting on this thread, suggesting that he cheat on her for revenge, etc., don’t get it. Sexual attraction is almost 100% about looks. What’s inside doesn’t make you want to touch someone, not even your husband. An ugly haircut can ruin a solid relationship; it’s not trivial.
I’m lucky, my other half usually lets major changes go after a few days. Like when I shaved off my mustache after over 20 years of it. Even my daughter, who had never seen me without one went nuts. But the big fun was a few years ago when I starting cutting all my hair off. She though I had just gone to get a haircut. Met her at dairy queen and waited until she was trying to order then took off my hat. I still chuckle at her reaction.
This isn’t a man/woman issue. It’s a people issue. Neither my husband nor I whine about each other’s haircuts, even if we’re not particularly fond of them. It’s his hair, and so he has the right to do with it what he wants, and he grants me the same consideration.
Whenever I see someone complaining about how “women always…” or “men always…” I figure that’s half the problem. If you’re lazy enough to try to figure out how someone ticks by referring to your broad stereotypes about “what men do” or “what women are like”, instead of paying attention to the needs and behaviors of that particular person, you deserve whatever scorn you get.
In this case, Ellie’s annoying because she’s selfish and whiny, not because she’s a woman.
I have this strip in one of the collections books; I always found Elly’s reaction irritatingly shallow. Now it seriously dates the strip, as men are wearing their hair shorter.I also thought the hair was drawn looking like a VERY bad haircut, and not particularly short; like only the top was trimmed!
Back in ’95 I was growing my beard long. Not quite ZZ Top, but I was getting there. I caught my whiskers in my coat zipper and decided to trim it back quite a bit. My soon to be ex-girlfriend was livid. She cried real tears.
Me and an ex b/f used to get into a similiar argument every time he got a haircut. I used to swear it made him look like a serial killer. He got it cut so short. I hated it and we fought everytime. Of course he is now an ex……….
Unbelievable. If Ellie had come back from the stylist with a new style and John said “you look awful” and “how can you do this TO ME” Ellie would have thrown a fit, cried for a week, and all the women readers (and most men) would have sided with her. Where’s the equality? The reciprocity? The basic human kindness?
his hair will grow back in no time, what is she whinning about? my husband shaved off his moustache and it took too long for it to grow back. he looked like a different man and it freaked me out.

I’m starting to agree with Elly here. Barbers are like bus drivers: don’t talk with them when they’re busy.

If John told Elly that he married her for her looks, he would either get the silent treatment or slapped.

Learn how to cut hair, Elly. You’ll save him some money and you can cut it the way you like.

Women should grow up for crying out loud.
They change their hair color then gripe if we notice it and gripe again if we don’t notice it. We can’t win.
