Go to Cornish in Seattle! Considerably less expensive, also very well respected. My older daughter went there and worked her patootie off and loved it. And it’s a lot cheaper to live in Seattle than New York…

“Here’s one called Juilliard….” Sigh. Luann seems singularly uninformed about this new professional aspiration she has adopted (the drama majors I knew were all well up on show business-related issues). Look for something closer to home, Luann. Much closer.

Today, you’d better have two careers in case one tanks.

Like, summer stock and nursing, wether you go to school or

not . The chance of breaking into show biz is the equivalent to

    playing on an NBA team!!

Schools don’t “make” artists, as talent is God-given. But they certainly can help those with talent develop what they have. Making a living with it and achieving fame, whole lotta hard work and luck for that to happen.

If Luann had truly given the performing arts any thought beyond recently, she would’ve known about Juilliard as a small child. Not ‘discovered’ it suddenly on her laptop. I think her mom is about to give her a hard lesson in the uncertain future Luann is heading for.

There are arts schools other than Juilliard which are a lot less expensive and would be better than a community college. I would not recommend online classes for Luann. She lacks the discipline for online-only and she really needs to start taking acting classes along with the rest of her education.

$46k.year is not so crazy if you want your child to go to school at all. Right now in-state room and board and tuition and fees for someone graduating in 2017 from a University of California school such as UC Davis will run about $150k. Julliard at $184k is not that much more of a stretch. It is getting ugly out there.

This is probably NOT true but I once heard that if they wanted Shirley Temple to cry they might tell her that her puppy died or something equally sad – Now that’s not acting – It’s living the role.

Okay, let’s all think back two weeks when this arc started and Luann didn’t even know what she wanted to do after high school. Remember? Now she’s looking up Julliard, which she’d never heard of. Does this sound like someone focused like a laser? It’s more like a typical high schooler daydreaming about a future they’d never even considered the day before.

Do you SUPPOSE she might actually think about the old man’s advice and try the local talent show or even trying out for a play at her high school before applying to Julliard? All Mom or Dad has to say is “We ain’t paying for it” to bring Luann back to terra firma.

The price is not the point here. Juilliard is the top of the heap in music schools, for highly talented classical musicians, and as out of Luann’s league as MIT would be in another career choice. But she is just beginning to look into what’s out there as far as schools are concerned. She and her mom need to do a thorough job of finding out all possibilities, all requirements, what Luann needs to begin doing now—which is going to take a lot of focus and discipline— before even thinking of sending in an application. Luann also needs to be encouraged to focus on possibilities in this area and not just distracted by other, cheaper, paths to the future. She does not necessarily need to be shunted into a junior college unless this is the best she can do.

You may think that – you’d be wrong. Sandler performed stand up comedy all through college and graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Whether you like his work is something else, but he didn’t just show up in Hollywood one morning to read “the lines given to him” – by the time he got to Hollywood (ike Murray and Chase), he was the one writing the lines he spoke..Murray got his training at Second City – that’s the comedy troup that turned out Catherine O’Hara and John Candy – maybe you’ve heard of them? He went from there to National Lampoon, where Belushi and Chase were. Again, if you don’t like it their work, don’t support it..So let me get this straight – most movies are junk, so AMPAS has expanded the best picture category ….to let more of them get nominated? Since only one can win, in what world does that make sense?.Back when there were “studio movies” (1930’s and 40s) the Best Picture nomination number was for 8-12 pictures, so your premise is wrong. It was restricted to 5 in 1944 – until 2008. Guess all the sh!t films were made after that, huh? .The reason it was expanded is that there have been so many revolutionary techniques in filmmaking that unconventional films that might have been restricted or sidelined in specific categories – like animation or combined live action/CGI – might not be recognized and nominated if the nomination category were kept to such a small amount.

“, find a nice (boring ) guy and settle down as a happy housewife and drink coffee while staring off into the distance considering what might have been”.Interesting assumption that all us guys are boring. some of us are fascinating, some of us they write case studies regarding..And then there’s the alternative that she goes off to a life of fame and fortune only to every now and then still drink coffee while staring off into the distance considering what might have been.

The idea of the road not taken is fairly ubiquitous. What if I had gone into….

If you want to know how unpredictable casting is in Hollywood, go through the list of the greatest characters in the last 40 years and see how many of them were the 3rd, 4th or 10th choices for the part. Harrison Ford was 35, had given up on acting and was a carpenter on the set of “Star Wars” when Lucas asked him to help out and read lines as Han Solo. Morgan Freeman was 50 before he got noticed in “Street Smart” and broke through in “Driving Miss Daisy.”

Bottom line is: never quit acting, but don’t expect it to pay the bills.

What is interesting about this arc is that Luann and her friends are thinking ahead to adulthood . After being in an 11th grade time-warp for fifteen years or so they may be ready to get promoted to the 12th grade.

The only thing boring here is the people who say its boring. I’d be more interested in hearing from those who have actually been to Juilliard, or studied theater arts. I know there is an actor or two out there who could lend some genuine authority to the discussion.

According to Juilliard’s web site, tuition is $33,630, room & board in a double room $12,770. Add in supplies, books, etc. and the tab comes to $50,674. Oh, and you don’t need to provide a transcript until after auditions1

I think I see this leading to a showdown between Luann and Tiffany. We know Tiffany went to LA thinking she was gonna be in a movie. We know Tiffany thinks she has the right stuff to be an actress…then Luann announces at school that she’s gonna go to Julliard…or wherever her mom and dad will pay to send her…that would be when these two butt heads and have shouting match and jealousy spew. Well, mostly on Tiffany’s part anyway – she will tell in an absolute term that Luann does not have the right stuff and she does and the right stuff being her beauty of which Luann has none.

Juilliard – no way. Luann doesn’t even know what hard work is. However with her talent for drama – and with that thing she has that a lot of people relate to her – Luann might get nabbed for a small TV role – then maybe more.

It’s like most other trades/ skills in this: Start local by volunteering, by teaching yourself, by being around others who know their stuff – like a local playhouse. Learn much cheaper that way, make lasting memories, gain some great skills. And if you’re good, go further. That could be said about many trades.

Mojitobaby: Glad you liked the pits line. It is true, by the way, and I still play in community bands. I liked the gag running through the first act of the Mikado, where the title character’s son has reappeared in this village. “He lived here and played in our village band – disguised as a second trombone.” “And if you heard him play, you know why it was second trombone!” Unreliable above high F, I prefer second.

Well if she wants to go to Julliard perhaps she should first learn how to carry a rifle to pay for it. Otherwise she’ll graduate find herself drowning in debt unable to find a job to pay her student loans and end up squatting in zuccotti park.

The bottom line is talent. You can go to the best schools, but if you don’t have real talent, you’ll end up waiting on tables. Unless you are someone like Justin Bieber, weak talent, but a “package” that little girls think they are supposed to like. Ironically, some of the greatest talent and voices are on Broadway and most people don’t even know their names.
