Lol. I love her two sidekicks.

I think now that Delta and Bernice have affirmed her parentâs suggestions. Luann will feel a little more relaxed among her friends and wonât feel embarrassed about going to a community college.
rayannina over 12 years ago
Bernice is terrific.
Sisyphos over 12 years ago
Even if Delta doesnât cook and Bernice doesnât like teenagers (no surprise there!), they clearly make a fine pair of surrogate parents for Luann. She has no escape from good advice!

You people are such dream thieves. Stealing the dreams of your children, and condemning them to live middle classâŠrubbish. Rubbish I tell you. The proper answer to Luannâs dream was: Okay. Earn the Scholarship to go there. Here are the requirements to earn the scholarship. Accomplish them, and make us proud.

I was at the state university with Inigo Montoya. He dropped out when he started getting gigs, then went to Juilliard. Saw him in Hamlet and other student productions. If youâve got the chops, youâll find your way there.

There is always American Idol.
Angelalex242 over 12 years ago
If Luannâs talent is singing, American Idolâs an option too. If itâs acting, Idol doesnât work so well.
Personally, I think it is the responsibility of every parent to never squash a dream, but instead, to be the mentor, the coach, to find out what it actually takes to make a childâs dream come trueâŠand then see to it they do what it takes. You canât just plop the requirements for Julliard in front of Luann. Youâve gotta encourage her every step of the way, remind her to train with her instructors, remind her to stay after class with those instructors, remind her to do what it takes to make it happen. Itâs hard. Very hard. But anything worth doing is hard.

So, any thoughts on whether or not this thread means that Greg might be ready to move Luann out of Pitts High and into the local Junior college? Itâs quite possible that the others could follow her there or be around town (i.e at WW, the Library and other places)âŠ

What a bunch of downer strips, crushing a teanage girlâs dreams. Whatever happened to going for your dreams? Has no one heard of scholarships? And there are a lot more options between Juilliard and a junior community college. For one thing if Luannâs plans are to one day get to Juilliard going to a community college makes it that much harder. Hasnât anyone thought of other colleges that have a well-thought of drama departments.
Fly On The Wall over 12 years ago
JuilliardâŠ.Luann isnât even that good in a comic strip, sheâs definately not Juilliard caliberâŠ.oh wait, thatâs Gregâs faultâŠ..NEXT story line please!!!!

Junior/community college can be a stepping stone to a university. Iâve had several college classmates who started that way.

Delta should take Bernice clothes shopping, her top is hotâŠBernice has an old ladyâs blouseâŠ.drab, drab, drab. Come on Greg, let Bernice show her assets. But, I have been enjoying the last three weeks of this strip. Hope Weenie World burns down or gets razed for a new Victoriaâs Secret, or .just disappears into a giant sink hole

Iâm sensing the potential for a major shift in âLuannâ once again. Is a graduation ceremony somewhere in the future?
serenasakitty over 12 years ago
A few weeks ago I remember reading some commenters saying that the strip was boring because it wasnât about Luann anymore. Now we have a strip about Luann and Iâm reading that it is boring because itâs about her. Make up your minds, people.
marvee over 12 years ago
@serenasakitty, Itâs only 1 or 2 individuals that complain, not âpeopleâ. As others have suggested, I can see Greg letting them graduate, some go to community college, others work, but theyâll be in the same town so all can be involved in the strip. Yes, itâs good to have a dream, but a you also have to have a realistic plan. Many very good students will not get into the most prestigious universities. And even state schools are expensive, especially when you consider room and board and transportation. So I have no problem with this plan. It doesnât mean her dreams are squashed.

Heh⊠Iâm almost fifty, Gokie. And yeah, I do have a ton of resentment towards my family, Iâm sorry to say. My brother got a full ride to college from my parents. I paid my own way. I had to. My oldest brother is/was the Golden Child. I was the âother kidâ. As in, âOh yeah⊠we have THREE kids. Forgot about that.â My oldest brother and I both have kidsâ he has 5, and I have one. My parents met my son when he was born, but have never had anything else to do with him. My brothers (I have 2) have NEVER met my son. My son is now 27 and hasnât ever met his uncles or cousins, and has no idea of his grandparents because they never had anything to do with him since he was 2 days old. For Peteâs sake, none of them even bothered to come to my wedding a year before my son was born. My brothers both heard, âYou guys can do ANYTHING and weâre behind youâ. I heard, âWell, thatâs just silly and youâll never make it on that path.â The boys were into sports; I was into music, dance and theatre. Performing arts, basically. I vividly remember more than one school or other performance where my dad went out to the car and went to sleep, and my mom critiquing everything I did⊠âYou missed that noteâ or âYou could have said that line in this wayâ⊠you get the idea. The final straw came when I found out that my dad had died when I found his obituary on line. Iâm not saying this as a whinefestâ just as a way to give some background into what kind of garbage I was dealing with. I cut all ties after that. But perhaps the ties were already cut and I just burned them. And, I made a vow that I would be there for MY sonâ he has made me very proud. He also got the musical passion and is an excellent guitarist. He also enjoys theatre, even performs with the community theatre in his town. He was one heck of a Dracula! :)

Luannâs acting like sheâs been accepted to Julliard. As far as I know, she hasnât even applied. Kind of got the cart waaaay before the horse.
underwriter over 12 years ago
Obviously this is not going to apply universally (no pun intended), but I have seen situations where a JC was physically near an academic powerhouse and constantly showed it up in performing arts. Performing arts can be â well â too academic.
krelboyne over 12 years ago
Mom and dad should buy Luann a pony so she can practice her ballet while she attends JC to be a thermodynamics astrophysicist.
ccronan over 12 years ago
So she is thinking about post HS? How many years has she been in High School? Thatâs why no college will take her. Interesting for the strip if she moves on.
JimT8 over 12 years ago
âWhat MAY happen is when school starts again, they will be seniors. Then after 10 â 15 years, they might start thinking college.â
They will be seniors, otherwise this college talk would not have come up. As for the 15 years, do you think Greg will want to do this then? He may be thinking ahead to what he could make happen in the next few years.
samfran6-0 over 12 years ago
I thought most were upset because Luann hadnât been in the strip for a while. But, Iâm with you. I find her boring ,also.
Chocoloop over 12 years ago
This has been a great storyline. Always have thought that Greg does his best work when Luann is his focus; these are the ones when I smile the most. Hopefully itâll keep going next week.
BettBi over 12 years ago
Greg, Hope this means Luann is finally going to move on another year. I love her, have been reading your strip for years, but sure would enjoy new strips where she develops into an 18-year old.

âAs for the 15 years, do you think Greg will want to do this then?âGreg Evans was born on November 13, 1947. Therefore, in 15 years he will be 79, at or past time to retire. Iâd like to say that Luann and themâll be at a community college next year, but maybe theyâll be h. s.seniors. I donât have a great track record on predicting this stuff.

I agree that Greg Evans is setting Luann up for a next step, probably involving closing out high school and struggling with further education. Sheâs not serious yet, because she is âwafflingâ between math/science and music with no idea what Juilliard is all about â itâs just something that she came across while searching the Internet..So, end of topic for now â time to pick up the Quill thread. Probably Greg will build this into a relationship, especially since he suggested that he wants to deal with some physical loving down the roadâŠ.I have problems with people who think various themes are boring. We all get a little tired of things moving slowly at times, when we wish some progress would occur. But keep in mind that getting what we want, would itself be boring, because conflict & uncertainty provoke interest and commentary..Personally, I would like to find out WHY Toni doesnât want to think or talk about marriage. Must be some resolved conflict that she canât face. Greg either doesnât know how to develop it, or just wants it to be a frustrating topic that he can come back to again and again.
JimT8 over 12 years ago
Maybe, except she would be good with kids, as sheâand Guntherâare at the library.

Gânite, all. I had to stay up late sending a buncha flowers to my husband for tomorrow. Paid a nice service fee. Remind me to plan ahead next year. Thanks. Oh, happy Fatherâs Day in advance to all to whom it might apply, dads, honorary dads, uncles, granddads, what-have-you.

No great deeds were ever accomplished by realists. Every Olympic Medalist ever is a dreamerâŠwho backed up their dream with the relentless hard work it takes to make that dream reality. As I said above, no dream shold ever be squashed. Simply outline what it actually takes to make it, and then teach them how to get there.
But, my storyâŠraised by parents who made 30k a year. Drastically changed course from what they did. Went into finance. Now I make 225k a year, give or take depending on production. I have the luxury of being able to tell my kids âdo as Iâve doneâ. I intend to make use of it.
Oh, and those parents? Not very supportive of my endeavor. I retired them both. On /my/ income. Think about that one for a while.
bscan48 over 12 years ago
So I guess this means that Greg is going to let Luann graduate high school next year. I think Greg is planning to send the whole gang to community college.

âThe best of friends.â.A friend will advise you not to do it.A good friend will bale you out afterward.A best friend will be in jail beside you saying, âMan, that was a blast!â.or something like that
David Huie Green LikeNobody'sEverSeen over 12 years ago
Angelalex242âNo great deeds were ever accomplished by realists.â.It depends on your definition of great. The communist revolutionaries were dreamers as a group. When they came to power, they didnât want to do the real work. Stalin didnât mind working so they gave him the boring stuff while they continued to imagine creating Utopia. When Lenin died, Stalin had all the power, killed off the idiots and became the great dictator of history..On the other hand, he may not have been a realist since his policies included murdering some 20 million people for the purity of Communist dreams. .or maybe he just held a grudge.
David Huie Green LikeNobody'sEverSeen over 12 years ago
âI have no disagreement with that. However, this comic strip is not mentioning the cheap state university option.â.It doesnât have to be all-inclusive. The artist can say as much or as little as he chooses. Nobody ever considers ALL their options.
David Huie Green LikeNobody'sEverSeen over 12 years ago
âMy parents had at one point promised to help me with the last 2 years, but reneged when they realized that I was pursuing music. âOh, you donât have the talent.â âYouâll never make it as a musician.â âYou need to get real.â âWhat makes YOU think you can sing?â (Never mind that I had a number of awards from competitions!) Basically, they browbeat me out of it, and without their help, I wound up not being able to afford DePaul, and I went into a less expensive programâ.One of my numerous cousins was told by her parents she didnât need to go to college because she was just going to be a nurse and didnât need college to do that..Priscilla responded, âI have too damn many uncles not to go to college.â My father was the first uncle she checked in on and he loaned her the money for college. He didnât expect her to pay him back, but she did.." I wonder to this day what I could have done had I become a music therapist or teacher? How much joy could I have brought into othersâ lives through bringing them the gift of music, and helping them to find their own pleasure through making or listening to music?".Once again, thoughts on the road not taken when in fact there are hundreds of roads not taken for every one which is. And youâre still young enough to take a few steps down that road if you really want to..Regardless, you would do well to forgive your parents for being imperfect. Thereâs only a few of us perfect people around and most others donât see our obvious perfection..You might be old enough to remember The Smothers Brothers with the constand jokes being based on âMom liked you best.â
David Huie Green LikeNobody'sEverSeen over 12 years ago
âBernice?Youâre NOT Fond of Teenagers??You ARE a Teenager!Does THAT Mean that You HATE Yourself???â.Not being fond of is not the same as hating..Many teenagers DONâT like themselves, wishing they were better in some way..Some teenagers are hard to tolerate and other teenagers avoid them whenever possible..Being mature for her comic strip years, she may find closer kindred minds in older people, say 20 year olds.
David Huie Green LikeNobody'sEverSeen over 12 years ago
âPersonally, I think it is the responsibility of every parent to never squash a dream, but instead, to be the mentor, the coach, to find out what it actually takes to make a childâs dream come trueâŠand then see to it they do what it takes.â.Whereas I disagree..Some childrenâs dream is to be the next great thief, mass murderer, world dictator, whathaveyou. Some dreams SHOULD be squashed â or at the very least discouraged, especially those which will hurt your child or other people.. Giving good and happy dreams is not the only kind of dream children have.
