Sorry all as bad sounds. Men are the ones who do run combines. The wife fixes the food sometimes meals sometimes sandwiches and takes to the men to eat been in the field. I am not a farmer, my sister is married to a man whose family sometime ago used not a/c tractor’s but the old type and the men were the ones who plowed the fields. If a man farmer who works the ground took sick real bad or died before harvest getting ready then other men pitched in and did cutting.
The combine was a major factor in erasing the male/female job descriptions. Check out some of the cheerleader types driving combines during summer “vacation”. The cradle-scythe is not used on the prairies any more. Entire families are in the field now.
The modern self-propelled combines are not that hard to run – the hard part is doing it right – cutting below the heads*, not losing out on the turns, etc. *Cut too high, part of the head is left, ie lost grain or too low and have to process too much straw. The grain lost can be the difference between profit and loss on the operation. Also, too low, and well, rocks just do not do a combine any good!
My uncle, who came from Italy, used to tell me of mowing a wheat field with a scythe. He never understood combines; he always said, “I don’t understand why you put half the grain back into the ground.” I don’t know if that actually happens with a combine – I hope someone here can enlighten me on that. All the same, I’ve never heard of easy, user-friendly type farm work.
I remember when this strip originally appeared long ago. It was the only time in the entire original run that Lynn let me down. Not with this strip, but with what I thought would happen the next day. I couldn’t wait to see what Elly would do about this guy…….and nothing happened! The strip moved on to something else. Dare I hope something different happens this time? Tune in tomorrow…..
Where I come from everybody old enough to drive takes their turn in the driver’s seat. And that’s how it was with all the women in my family for quite a few generations. It was the only way to get everything done.

Darn Arnold’s sexism; this coming from a male.

Apparently not around in the 50’s, 60’s or 70’s and even up to present times.
I doubt your hearing of something is any reliable criteria of its existance. The world is a much bigger place than Bend, Oregon.kfccanada over 12 years ago

To me women could do it as well, but I question her experience as I would a student driver to a driver of thirty years.

Thanks Gweedo. My family never had any time for the men’s work/women’s work nonsense. There was just work to be done.

I worked on a farm years ago with others from my agriculture
class. Tired hungry and filthy. We went for dinner the wives said “spiffy up” or no dinner
Amonite over 12 years ago
It kind of looses its punch by throwing in the “men don’t think” stereotype, though having a sexist strip about sexism gains humor from irony.
