My son loves to plant, tend and harvest tomatoes, peppers, onions and carrots. He is very proud. But he won’t eat them! The rest of us are loving them though- they are wonderful!
No. 1: Yesterday someone passed along her (I think it was a “her”) disappointment that, as she recalled, Lynn did not pursue yesterday’s confrontation between Elly and Arnold. Upon reflection, I feel that it wouldn’t have been too good for Elly to have a major dustup with her brother-in-law’s hired hand. Decent help (even male-chauvinist help) can be hard to find.
No. 2, it looks as though all the stove burners on on. That wouldn’t be good, either.
I too, don’t care for COOKED beets, but give me pickled beets or cooked beet greens (when the little beets are about the size of your pinky nail), and I’ll show you a real trick! Even beats spinach, which I also love.
My mom (rest in peace) would always have pickled beets – ruby red beets – with pirogis, or with cabbage dishes. Any old world Polish-style meal would be made with pickled beets. Not my favorite vegetable, but I learned to eat them.
I always like beets, in moderation. cooked cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, squash, no thanks. Parents cooked everything to mush, maybe if they hadn’t, I would be more tolerant.
I always liked pickled beets. Roasted sounds interesting..Having kids grow their own food, and the fresher flavor often gets kids started on eating their vegetables.
Digging potatoes was always great too, dig in with the fork, and lift, and never kenew what would come up – bunch of little ones or maybe a jumbo sized one.
My own memory of beets: My little brothers babysitter canning them. Pressure cooker blew up. When we heard the screaming everyone headed out the door. Purple stains from floor to ceiling covering 80% of the kitchen!
Hello all from my discussion from yesterday, I was very serious. My sister marrried a Menite family, while the men we’re driving an old type tractor the women this included my sister was getting food prepared to take to the men to eat then the men would take breaks. Evan when I used to travel west and see combines or fields being worked I never see a woman driving the tractor only a men. In the field. When a farmer husband took ill or died, and one died just recently, were men who helped the widow or spouse with the field no women.
There’s nothing more delicious than fresh beets staight from the garden, boiled, and then served with a little butter,or margarine, and a little salt. Yummy. :)
I never had borscht, but would be glad to try it. I really like pickled beets, expecially in a salad. Harvard beets are really delicious. It’s sort of sweet-n-sour beets, and they are served hot…yum.
I hated my mother’s borsht – it was thick and pink with sour cream. When I went to the town in Poland where my mother’s mother came from (in Galicia), I stayed with a Polish family. They made their borsht without sourcream and cut the beets thin. It was a clear red soup and I enjoyed it.
Re: Borscht – I like beets in any form, and always thought it would be interesting to try authentic borscht. So when I found myself at a Wolfie’s in Boca Raton, FL, I ordered the borscht, thnking it would be the genuine article. Well, it was EXACTLY like what you’d drain out of a jar of Aunt Nellie’s pickled beets, no more, no less. That Wolfie’s is closed now. (Also, the server set my grandson’s carrier into a highchair wrong, and the whole concern tipped over backwards – kid wasn’t hurt, but it didn’t help my opinion of the place.)

Try some, Lizzie. I don’t believe you until you show me you “hate” them. ;-)

I didn’t like beets when I was a kid. Then I had my Grandma’s pickled beets. Yum! And years later, I like beets prepared prepared almost any way.

I love beets. When I was a kid visiting my grandmother, she would pull up fresh beets and cook them with the greens, then serve with butter. Yum!
