Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for July 29, 2012
Transcript:
Gunther: "I'm sorry Quill had to go back to Australia, Luann. You two were a nice couple" Luann: "We weren't really a couple, Gunth. Not like you and Rosa" Gunther: "Oh, we're not a couple. What we have isn't anything like that" Luann: "What is it , then?" Gunther: "It's sort of a friendly-but-not-intimate, warm-but-not-hot, semiromance" Luann: "Sounds like Quill and me: A will-we-won't-we, passion-lite, zingless fling" Gunther: "Well, as long as we keep this up, we'll never get in trouble" Luann: "Sometimes I feel like I'm living in a family comic strip or something..."

I salute you for your astute comment.

I wonder if Greg is finally getting fed up with a significant percentage of the comments here (and perhaps elsewhere) and is letting those responsible know about it…

I guess the players in this strip will never get the opportunity to grow up into adulthood…..I was kinda hoping for a transition to a “For Better or Worse” kind of timeline….even if it takes ten more years for her to turn 21.
kenhense over 12 years ago
@ blunebottle – How about two more years to turn 18? “For Better or Worse” broke ground in this respect. Family comics don’t all have to be like “Blondie.”
Sisyphos over 12 years ago
Feels like an episode of The Twilight Zone, doesn’t it, Luann? I suspect those passion-lite semiromances are probably more common than you think….

As Jessica Rabbit said, “I’’m not bad. I’m just drawn that way.”

sure are a lot of snarkish people on here (can I say that on TV?) -doesn’t anyone just enjoy reading the comics for the sake of reading them? Good grief! Do you folks gripe about the novels you read as well? (presuming of course, that you read novels -when you have time).

And now, another observation for the “You Know You Really Need A Life When…” files,
#39: “You Know You Really Need A Life When… You constantly bemoan, groan, complain or cry (or insert your favorite synonym, here) about how a comic strip is or isn’t going for the characters in the strip.”Now, back to our regularly scheduled program.

Walls were meant to be broken from time to time. It allows the audience to feel like they are part of it.

Luann isn’t nearly as mature as Hilary Forth.
Luann fills that crucial niche between Hi and Lois and The Born Loser.
Crumbucket over 12 years ago
It’s OK. There’s always the fifth wall to keep it all together.
cooldude45 over 12 years ago
dont think that luann! You’ll destroy the time space continuum!
lance96816 over 12 years ago
Uh oh, Greg she found you out. But really guys, this is a comic. And it is about a teen age girl and her problems. Not about a teen growing up.
1proudinfadel over 12 years ago
kenhense— Gasoline Alley was the one that broke ground with the people in the strip aging. the exception being the two Junk collectors

Please do not bring up “For Better or For Worse.” I still cannot get over how Lizardbreath chose to marry Anthony, especially seeing how he was a complete jackass to her earlier.
You’re right Simpson, there’s more action in “Family Circus.”
imbaldeagle over 12 years ago
Luann – you mean like this doesn’t seem real – somewhat contrived? Say it isn’t so. But maybe that’s what most teens feel, at least some of the time.
AB9SS over 12 years ago
Yeah,
Cue the theme music from that classic TV show…
Will make it with live actors and for irony, we’ll use Lindsay Lohan to play Luann!

Reminds me of that Val Kilmner parody movie where he’s telling his love interest that there has to be more to what’s happening than ‘this’ or it would just be a bad movie…then they both look at the camera.

So if Quill had NOT moved back to Australia….
justalurkr over 12 years ago
Had Quill not moved back to Australia, The J.A.M., zingful flinging would no doubt be in progress.

Geez. I think this is a perfect Sunday comic for Evans to produce! It helps the Sunday only readers stay abreast of the basic developments in the story line. And, it is IMHO Evans nod to all the rather absurd comments here about the need for “racier” romances and Brad and Toni living together etc. Let us be a bit realistic… even though those things do happen, that is not typical in a newspaper comic. I think Mr. Evans is very dutifully and very successfully walking the line between reality and fiction in terms of his story lines. Bravo, Greg!!!!! Keep up the great work!
Cardhu over 12 years ago
A lifeless and boring family comic strip lacking any resemblance to real human behavior. Even Tiffany’s reality check bounce was anticlimactic.
For Better or Worse is more interesting and humorous because it is more realistic.
Tinyman over 12 years ago
Just a reminder that its just a comic strip. I remember in the 80’s a couple of comedy shows made fun of them selves too. The line would go something like, “This is real life. What do you think this is? A Comedy TV show or something?”
The Old Wolf over 12 years ago
Heh. Didn’t break it, but sure bumped up against it hard.
BillWa over 12 years ago
Chastity, it works 100% of the time it is applied.

Well, somebody’s been reading the comments section. I still think that Gunther is into dudes. It would be a great story. He should go for it.

Re all the comments about Gunther. Seems to me he has always wanted a girlfriend. However Gunther hasn’t encountered an aggressive one yet. He may have Aspergers or something – doesn’t know how to tell when the door is open.
RonBerg13 Premium Member over 12 years ago
You don’t know the half of it, Luann…
Charles Weir over 12 years ago
Today’s “Sally Forth” was about people never aging in their strip. Now if “Luann” was on-line only, maybe there’d be a bit more action. I spoke to Greg Evans at ComicCon and he said there’s just so far you can go.

Next Luann looks at her high school transcript and realizes she’s been taking the same classes for twenty years.

Time travels differently in fantasy land. Some never seem to age even though their hair and clothing styles and toys do. I think M*A*S*H even had more Christmases than we were involved in the Korean Conflict.-Consider how Beetle Bailey’s attitude made sense if he were a conscript, but not if he joined the Army willingly. At least they’re still using Jeeps even though nobody else in the military does.
GasHouseGorilla over 12 years ago
Hey you guys leave Mr. Evans alone on this strip! It’s his strip & he’ll decide how it’ll end. It would stink if Luann decides to Marry Aaron Hill and that’s it. I want to enjoy this ride! Also, I think this is why Brooke McEldowney (9 Chickweed Lane) doesn’t want critcism in his strips.
I’ve always liked Gunther as a character because he’s different. He knows who he his & what he isn’t. I never see him trying to pick up girls stating he was Brad Pitt’s brother. So what he sews too. My late mother taught me how to sew and I learned some more in AF Boot camp. Someone like the owner of the Men’s Wearhouse make money.
And as for Gunth being gay, give me a break!! I think Mr. Evans wants to show his readers that it’s good to see what’s in the heart, not put on like comestics. I feel Gunther likes Luann similar to a recent Joe Nicoles country hit, “Give me that girl”.
Finally, I think Mr. Evans wants his readers to wonder what happens at the end of a story. Shoot! I never seen Lucy Van Pelt go out with Schoeder at the end of the “Peanuts” comic strip. Sparky ended that strip good, but it’s sad Charles Schulz is gone.
ChrisV over 12 years ago
Should we tell her? Oh, okay i will: “Luann, you are in a family comic strip. Therefore you’ll only know passion on your wedding night and that’s only to give your paernts a granchild.”
Daniel Aplet over 12 years ago
you are Luann you are.
The Old Wolf over 12 years ago
I’m not sure if Evans has acknowledged anything. It could be taken that way, but unless he comes right out and says it, there’s a lot of wiggle room. As for kissing, Luann and Quill just engaged in a fair bit of snogging not many days ago.
Homeboy1865 over 12 years ago
Reminds me of the Far Side panel on ‘Cartoon Teenagers". A teenage boy says to his father, "Hey, I didn’t ask to be drawn."
Homeboy1865 over 12 years ago
Also, notice that Luann says “FAMILY” comic strip.
theaterajojo over 12 years ago
Excuses. Excuses. How about breaking some new ground and challenging yourself, Greg. Having the love interest move away time and time again is PHONING IT IN. I think you’re better than that.
