Mary Lou: Did you tell your mother "dressy casual"?
Gene: Uh, not yet.
Mary Lou: Gene! It's important! Call her now!
Gene: OK, OK.
Gene: Mom, Mary Lou said dress casual!
Hey, I left my sport coat in a hotel in Montreal….I’m almost 60. can’t think of an event that would make me buy a new one. Although I do clean up well, I’m told, and really do look great in a suit.
If I know the divide between the way men and women comunicate like I think I do there is a distinct difference between “dress casual” and “dressy casual”.
I couldn’t get my husband into a suit for the Queen of England. He wore one to my father’s funeral and one to my sister’s. He made me promise to have him laid out in a turtle neck and blazer.
Is ’ Dressy Casual’ the same as ‘Business Casual’ If not I haven’t a clue… Life is so much simpler for us men. It’ either Jeans and Polo neck or suit and tie, easy.
I think the point might be that Gene could not give his full concentration to remembering the message with the sight of Mary Lou’s derriere foremost in his mind. He is a healthy young man. And, yes, men do not relate to the nuances of fad dress codes just like we don’t get colours named after fruit or seasons.
I’m of the female persuasion, and I didn’t get it. Not a slave to fashion, I guess. I dress up on Sundays (though nobody else does at the churches I go to now), but on weekdays I go for Walgreens tees and comfy black pants.
It’s hard to get my husband to go anywhere if he can’t wear shorts. It has to be below freezing before he will where long pants. Fortunately he’s always had a job where he could wear shorts. Weddings and funerals are an exception.
@ Dani rice – We laid out Dad for the viewing in khakis, polo, flannel shirt, his favorite baseball hat, glasses, and cigar- otherwise no one would have recognized him . ;-D
Obviously, there’s going to be a wedding. I wouldn’t be sure how to dress either and would be in a stew about it. I’m thinking a nice (with some embroidery or lace) pants or capri outfit for a woman and khakis (ironed) with an open-neck dress shirt for a man.
Casual, jeans, three button short, corocan jump boots. Dressy casual, jeans, full button down short, POLISHED jump boots. dress. black denim, nice black short, same jump boots to a mirror shine
My bride and I (12 years ago) did encourage people to dress casually and that is exactly what we meant. But we both work with words and both of us know that “dressy” is an adjective that modifies “casual,” making it less casual.

I cannot believe that I am commenting on this. However, I now have a giant knot in my stomach! This is real-life drama.

I forgot to mention that I was focused on the rainstorm in the distance (4th panel). Kind of like the gun on the table at the beginning of a play?

I have never heard the term “dressy casual” and I’m a woman! I would have thought she meant “dress casual” as well. This is gonna be embarrassing.

Man, you really screwed that one up! Of course, to me, dressy casual is a NICE pair of jeans or khakis and a nice top.
Dry and Dusty Premium Member about 12 years ago
If that’s Issac, what Janis is wearing won’t make any difference!
