John keeps digging the hole deeper…lol.. doesn’t have a clue about how badly he’s making Ellie feel. Ellie should get up and walk out…but….John wouldn’t even understand why she did. My mom used to remember every single incident such as this…it blew her self esteem to total shreds. Some women just don’t have the emotional fortitude to ignore this type of incident.
@rene tray: yep, we are. And as afficionado states so correctly: married is not dead, you can look, but not touch.. ;-D Personally i don’t mind if my husband looks at other women that way or even comment on them, i do the same with other men..but that may be a cultural difference, as we live in europe.
It’s supposed to be a date night. They should be paying attention to each other, not the other diners. And it was Ellie who called his attention to the other couple.
We should note that he’s cheating. And at times like this, we remember that this strip is substantially autobiographical, in the broad themes, if not always in the details. And this is from an era when there were just hints of things to come.
hehehe…true…but it might be more politically correct if he was not eyeing another woman while out with his wife!!!!!! Or at least not so blatantly!!!!!
I’ve told my husband several times if he wants to look at other women, he better not do it when I’m with him. He thinks it’s hilarious when he does it in front of me, but I don’t think it’s funny and I’ve let him know it in no uncertain terms. I even told him I would walk away from him if he embarrassed me like that again.
I’ve enjoyed many of these comics, but every once in a while, there is a series of comics like this one that really paint a picture of men in a bad light. Not all men are like this.
Elle knows John is not going anywhere. That’s why she doing a “how stupid can you get” facepalm rather than recoiling in horror at the thought of him finding another woman physically attractive.
While John is admiring the woman and Fred’s ability to find them, Elly should ask him if he’s planning on finding one like that himself. It seems they’ve forgotten about Fred’s wife at this point.
If this is truly a true story, Lynn didn’t lose anything in the divorce. I’m amazed she stuck it out as long as she did. I don’t see anything wrong with him noticing the other woman or even commenting on her, but the fact that his eyes are bugging out of his head and he is starting to sweat & pull at his tie show how stupid he really is.

And that right there, people, is the difference between men and women. By the way — judgmental much, Elly?

Ellie should send him over to the table to say Hi and find out who the girl is.

@kfccanada This is the original strip. Lynn did not change it this time around.

On the plus side, John might be a little more uh shall we say perky when they get home.

John is so stupid, he deserves to be divorced and penniless. which would be the perfect dessert to his “appetite.”
such immature children parading in grown up bodies.

Yep, John will be “romantically inclined” when they get home, and won’t understand why Ellie has a headache.

Actually, on this, Ellie’s the one putting her foot in her mouth. Her comments feed her husband’s continued admirations. Silly Ellie.

Panels 2 and 3 Ellie is being catty and bitchy. John isn’t doing anything wrong here.
QuietStorm27 about 12 years ago
Ellie shouldn’t have brought the woman to John’s attention. He was focused on her.
