I find this strip uncanny. My best friend in elementary school lived in low income housing, his dad was out of the picture, was a redhead, had an older sibling (sister in his case) who treated him like crap, and my parents didn’t want me to hang out with him. So I am always rooting for Kevin!
I find the nastiness of parents regarding their child’s friend a bit unsettling. I grew up in a rural, poverty-stricken area. There was a girl, two years younger than me, that parents would refuse to allow their kids to play with. My parents were very open-minded so we had friends of all ethnicities and religions that were in the area. I was a friend to this girl so of course, there were kids that weren’t allowed to play with me because of that. The problem with the girl? Her mother turned tricks and her father sexually abused her and later her older brother also sexually abused her. All these parents knew this was happening (at the time, I did not or I would have told my parents who would have done something). This family was in good standing in the local Catholic church yet this abuse was going on. It wasn’t until I was an adult and had moved away from the area that I realized some of what she was telling me, I was so naive! I hope she has found love and acceptance where ever she is now living. Kids are so accepting naturally, it is a shame that parents will breed nastiness into their kids.
