Yeah, that takes the beauty right out of it. I was raised outside of towns, so I’ve grown to enjoy nature. I can do snow, and ice, but not the heat of Texas summers.
Grew up shoveling the stuff and still love it! We build a rink in the backyard for skating and ski on the area mountains. Counting the days for the first real snowfall.
First snowfall in Southern New England due today. Got the fire laid, the hot chocolate ready, and am ready to give the wife her Christmas snow shovel early. Should I put a bow on it?.
It snowed here in Lake Charles, La. last night. Earliest snow in recorded history. Rained all day before that so the ground is soaked but there is a pretty dusting on the ground this morning. After living in Pittsburgh for 15 years I’ll take this kind of winter.
I’ll take the snow over the hot summer anytime. But it is pleasanter to look at out your window than having to go out in it.
Susan is right Lewreader, your wife’s gonna clobber you with that shovel, and if I were your wife I’d clobber you for referring to me as “the” wife rather than your wife. That’s so impersonal.
John looks pretty miserable, putting on his jacket, but I have no sympathy. Get yourself a hat, warm sweater, long coat, scarf, gloves/mittens, warm boots, and put them all on! It’s not as tho you can’t afford to buy them!
poor guy… ..the garage is attached to the house, so he drives out of the garage , drives a little slower than normal to his office and parks in an already cleared away spot near the door of his office and has to go twenty feet or so to the door stomps the snow off his feet and then works in his nice , warm office all day…..
You all are cracking me up today. :-) We got our first “blizzard” of the year Atlanta-style… i.e. a couple of flurries that didn’t stick and coldish temperatures just above freezing.
Driving in the snow is not so bad (at least until it gets very heavy); it’s the drivers who think they can drive like it is a warm sunny day that are a problem. And working up a sweat shoveling snow while you are freezing is not fun either.
I live in FL and right now it’s raining; but during the winter here one day it could be 56 degrees out side and the next it could be 85 degrees out so if you don’t like the snow than come to Fl and all of the real Floridians will just call you snow birds and ask you to stay off the roads while you are here.
imrobert: I live in Victorville, California. That’s in the high desert near San Bernardino. December 23 last year we had a blizzard that left more than a foot of snow in an area that usually sees a few non-stick flurries. Our ONE snow plow had quite a busy few days. Don’t try to tell me California doesn’t get snow.
THAT is why we live in Florida. Too many memories of “the beauty of nature” dripping down my neck, making my socks soaked, and having an aching back from shoveling, brushing, and scraping all that beauty so I can use the car. Nope, warm air, gentle breezes, and a day at the beach is the best Christmas of all.
You can always move to Florida where it gets nice and hot in the summer, and nice balmy temperatures in the winter if you don’t mind hurricanes (no, not the University of Miami team), Wenthral. Or move to Southern Arizona, Reno, Nevada. There’s a variety of HOT places to go to.
We had very cold and snow a little here in Reno/Sparks, NV. For older people, they can move down to South states such as Florida, Arizona, NM and Hawaii for warm weather. Not good place to live in Reno during cold weather. Reno, NV. is my native hometown where I was born and raised all my life.
summerdog, hot cocoa machine? why on earth? Just heat some milk, shake together some good quality cocoa, sugar (equal amounts), a tiny bit of salt and vanilla with a bit of water and pour in the milk, voilá! Beats any machine cocoa. Or well, buy some Swiss Miss or other hot cocoa mix and heat water - nowhere close to as good, but easier.
Of course if you want proper hot chocolate, it’s even easier, buy some good quality dark chocolate, heat milk to the boiling point, melt the chocolate in the milk, also add a tiny bit of salt, then whip some cream to have on top. Mmmhh, I think I’ll make this right now :D
The machines stir the cocoa into a nice froth. It’s more like a premium cup of hot cocoa you’d purchase from a cafe. You can buy the dark chocolate cocoa mixes, and mocha’s.

Elly is definitely a writer. Only a writer could describe a cold, blustery winter day as poetically as she just did.

Sounds like Elly is a member of the loudly detested White Christmas Lunatic Fringe. I hope they all choke on their honeyed tea…

Exactly. For all the times I heard Bing Crosby sing “White Christmas”, never once do I recally him singing it while he was shoveling snow.

Anyone know the brand name of a nice hot cocoa machine that works and lasts longer than one winter? I’d like to purchase one.
