Amazing how adults can project their ideas on to an infant. The first Christmas I can remember even a little was when I was seven. I think the only reason I remember it is because we were living in a rent house for several months in between selling our old house and the completion of our new house.

Yup. Babies won’t be even upset if there is no present for them. I usually just give my grandchildren clothes when they were babies because they grow fast and would need clothes. With toys, they have short attention span and will get bored with them in a few minutes. So why bother? Wait until they are older to find what interests them and buy those things for Christmas. I know what to get my 5-year-old grandson but with my 21 months old granddaughter, I just buy clothes and some toddler crayons with poster papers because she is fascinated with the colors of the crayons. She beelines to my art cart and grabs my colored pencils and carries my watercolor palette and sits and stares at it so she seems to be a budding artist. The upside is she can’t count yet so she won’t know that her brother has 2 more gifts than her.

For those of you who like to follow running jokes, Farley does have a candy cane in his mouth, as he has on many Christmases before this one.

She thinks, I want a bottle, and a new diaper. And I may chew on my finger.

I remember my nephew’s first Christmas… he was six months old and it looked like Toys R Us threw up…. poor kid sat in the middle of everything and cried his eyes out because he couldn’t figure out what to do or look at or grab first…. then he found an empty box and was happy.

Just saw a vid of friend’s grandbaby opening a present. No interest whatsoever in the gift, but couldn’t get enough of crinkling the wrapping paper. Reminded me of cats with paper bags or boxes.

I remember our 4-month-old falling asleep under the tree. We stuck a bow on his butt and took a memorable picture. I also remember his surprise when he tried to stick a pine bough in his mouth.

Our daughter at three months was more interested in one of the boxes than the toys.

My youngest granddaughter is 4 1/2 months old. My wife is Jewish so we don’t celebrate Christmas (please don’t have us), but last Sunday, when everyone was over, we gave all the kids gifts. Although my little granddaughter had no clue about Christmas, the bright primary colors of the Barbie type presents we gave our 5 year old granddaughter definitely got her attention.
