This reminds me of a scene from “Volcano” where the 13 year old announces that she’s getting a nose ring and the baby sitter comments “nice look. Especially when you sneeze.”
I picked up a ring from the band hall floor and gave it to the conductor. He asked if anyone was missing a ring. A drummer came forward and popped his gage ring back into his ear.
My oldest had her nose pierced in high school. At her graduation picnic (1992, around the same era as this strip I believe), I overheard this adorable conversation between a pair of 8- or 9-year-old cousins:
“For Better of For Worse” always concluded the strip with an ironic statement. So, it’s ironic how Elizabeth lending gross stuff from her locker, would be grossed out by Duane and his nose ring.
It was hard to get a shocked look from my mother, who was a widow with 9 kids, and was a hospital nurse. But when a friend of mine insisted I ask Mom if she would do a nose piercing for her, the look on Mom’s face was beyond incredulity, and her “No!” could probably be heard for miles!

That’s what she gets for keeping a messy locker.

When I see a nose ring I always wonder if boogers get stuck to it. Yuck.

Reminds me of that old nursery rhyme:
With bells in her nostrils And rings in her nose, She shall have music Whenever she blows.
