Worked the night shift at an Air Service one summer. Spent most of my time wasahing airplanes and filling the fuel trucks. Only one or two planes would come in between *8PM and 4 AM.
Note to Mike: Parties are not the same as all-nighters. All-nighters are when you study all night, not party. Of course, Mike is not much for that studying thing, it’s no wonder he gets the terms confused.
For many years, I was the Night Manager for several resorts and high-end hotels. I found that the people I hired as auditors, night desk, night security, maintenance, etc. pretty much all had one thing in common – they were self-starters and preferred to work with a minimum of supervision.
It wasn’t just the higher pay to work graveyard shifts that attracted them, it was the sense of freedom to do their work without feeling they were _under the microscope of management and the public.
That’s what I did when I started college. We were called night stockers, stocking shelves and pricing and repricing all the items in the store (the price was on each item back then). Made it hard to stay awake in chemistry class.
Lynn’s Comments: When I did the strips about Michael working in a supermarket, I made up the name “Megafood” thinking it was unlikely that any grocery store would take a name like that. I was wrong. There IS a chain called Megafood!
Lynn Johnston is incorrect. There is a food supplement company called Megafood. I found no grocery store chain with that name.

Worked days running the dairy department for a few years
Stocking around customers is no more fun than it is trying to shop around stockers

One more year? Do Canadian colleges grant degrees after just one year? That’s about how long he’s been there.

Night workers are a breed unto themselves.
