Where are they going for this conversation? Gordon lives upstairs at the garage. They were warm and comfortable in his office. Why are they out walking in the snow to talk? Why didn’t John put his pants back on before he went out in the snow? Is Gordon escorting John back to his car for safety, in case someone notices he is pants less? I have so many questions.

Or power.

Re howtheduck’s comment from yesterday: John DOES look like he has fat, bare legs in this arc! Lynn (or GoComics) had better get a new colorist!

My dentist told me that a big problem for him was patients who wanted to put their bill on credit, but then never paid or paid very little.

Money and power.

In both cases, greed has no limits. None.

That is a painful reality. I think people would be a lot better to each other if money was not a factor.

You’re a nice guy, Gordon, and that’s why people will take advantage of you. Of course if they come back needing more service you’ll have to refuse until they’ve paid what they owe, right? You might have to call and “remind” them that they owe you money though it’s unpleasant to have to do that, but sometimes necessary.

That’s something you learn fast

As a dentist, John should know about people not paying their bills…

Never loan a significant amount of money to a family member or a friend. if you do that, consider it a gift, because it’s likely that they’re never going to pay it back. And if you do call it a “loan“, unless you are reminding them, they will conveniently forget and over time you will come to resent them.

I don’t know if they have this in Canada but Gordon could levy a “mechanic’s lien” and auction off the car to pay the debt.

From Lynn’s Comments: I put some serious personal observations into the strip…and this one resulted in some very personal responses. People told me about problems they couldn’t resolve: about money owed, borrowed or invested with family or friends. It’s a subject that confounds us all.

People are unfair, true. If they’re unfair dealing with money, odds are they are unfair in many other areas. They need to know God, and HIS laws and ways. There WILL be an accounting, if not in this life, than in the next. And if they don’t KNOW Jesus, they’re lost. Plain and simple. But for the lost, it’s not the next life….The Bible calls it the second death. Eternal pain and suffering.

The god before god.

Unfortunately, there are too many users in this world who will take complete advantage of the nice guy.

Especially when it comes time to letting go of it in cash. Paying with credit cards, however, are a different story.

Truer words have yet to be spoken. Sorry, Gord, you deserve better than to be stiffed by your customers but people are people, not always cool. John is correct. I don’t know how some folks think it’s okay to just blow off someone’s work (large animal veterinarians, plenty of home services, etc,) with the famous “Just bill me” line.. Good luck with that approach at the grocer, or the salon, or any mercantile.
