I will diverge from the pope. While it’s true that most of the damage to the planet comes from lower birth-rate-per-capita nations, it doesn’t follow that increasing the size of the world’s population will help.
Oooh, clunker? They’ve been placing this burden on “children” for generations. How about cleaning up our own messes, so they don’t have to? Seems a bit more fair than expecting those who didn’t cause it to do it for us.
There is a valid point here. In order to have a sustainable economy, a country needs a good diversity of ages and skill levels in its workforce. In America, our birthrate is insufficient to keep a good balance between a younger workforce and an aging population.
Fortunately, the United States is in a position where, even though we can’t make younger workers in sufficient numbers, we can import them.
This is not a political statement; it’s an economic statement.
Funny how the wisdom is that two can live as cheaply as one, but when a foot long baby is added, holy crap! Everybody turns into Ebenezer Scrooge with a calculator and book of government statistics. There’s no calculators or statistics around when that latest gadget comes out or you want to go to Europe.

I see the point. We really must do more to reverse the damage we’re doing to our planet.

“Young people will save the planet, demand justice, stop wars, because it’s their future.”
That’s certainly what the last generation of children has done, isn’t it? /S
How about, ‘Hey, it’s my future, not yours!’

“Pope Francis seems to get younger, more childlike as he ages.”
What’s the difference between innocence and ignorance?

How many children of their own do these hypocrites have?

The children grow up and get just as selfish as the generation before them.
I’m from the idealistic generation that took to the streets protesting war.
When they got older, they started wars.

Bringing a child into a world of poverty, hardship and abuse is not a way to make the world a better place.
