Most nudniks (except, apparently, in the EU and Japan) don’t understand what it means to be a teacher. However, I was raised by academics.

And nobody puts the worth of a teacher better than Taylor Mali.

On days when they do not have recess duty, the business people will be permitted to use the staff restroom during the 15 minutes that another survival candidate is supervising their students. They will also be provided with two 40-minute planning periods per week while their students are having music or art class in the classroom and one 40-minute planning period while their students are having physical education in the gym. If the copier is operable, they may make copies of necessary materials at that time. The business people must continually advance their education on their own time, preferably during the summer months, and pay for this advanced training themselves. This can be accomplished either by moonlighting at a second job or marrying someone with a lot of money. The winner will be allowed to keep their job.

Once again the variation on an old saw:

    those who can? Teach

those who can’t? Do – something – else – PUHLEEZE

People who think teachers work part time are also the ones who think football players and Priests only work on Sunday. There is a lot of work done behind the scenes, and a lot of school supplies paid for by the teachers.

It’s like if I went to work and had to pay rent for the station at which I work.

Teachers are definitely underpaid for what they do.

We are not just disseminators of knowledge; we also operate a free day-care and try to teach the children social skills and a bit of civility in the process.

Why do people think that? It obviously would be a ton of work just watching 30 kids, let alone teaching them.

I will never understand why people think teachers don’t work much! I’m not even a teacher and I can see it’s one of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard!

The 5 greatest bargains in America:

    (1) sunshine(2) fresh air(3) clean water(4) public libraries(5) public schools

You can send your kids to school for 7 hours a day, 5 days a week, 40 weeks a year, for 13 years and not have to pay a dime for it. Even if you were paying the entire per-pupil cost out of your own pocket, it would still be less than what you’d pay for simple custodial child care. Plus which, they throw in a free education along with the baby-sitting.

Damn socialists! Trying to make the private sector look bad again!

The U.S. average public school teacher salary for 2013–14 was $56,610 which was about the average household income in that year. The average household income though is for an average of 1 1/2 people working. So it seems that they should not “Have to” work to make ends meet. But outside of the top 0.1% of the income earners, who can’t find life a little more pleasant with a little extra money in addition to the benefit of not sitting around being bored (the most common complaint of retired people).

It is necessary to buy a lot of materials in order to do the best possible job of reaching all of your students. It was right after Christmas on my first teaching job when my husband hesitantly asked me " Dear, I know you love teaching, but do you have any estimate on when you might start breaking even?"

Good teachers have meant the world to me; not a slacker in the bunch. I owe a lot to them. Clearly, they are not paid enough!

I live in California. Years ago I was a manager in fast food, and we had several teachers who would come work in the summer, because they needed the money. I would never consider teachers to be overpaid; nor police nor firefighters, etc.
