A lady from Albania told me the black cat crossing your path thing started with a king getting captured during battle and blamed his loss on having seen a black cat cross the path on his way to battle. The cat was accused of being a tool of Satan.
That whole “black cats are bad luck” thing is beyond foolish. It hurts their adoption chances, leads to abuse, and more. I have had multiple black cats, and they are sweet, loving kitties. Let’s declare every Friday the 13th AND Halloween “cuddle a black cat day.”
Well, for one thing, she’s not all black. Tuxedo cats don’t carry the same stigma, I don’t think. So sorry she thinks so. But, heck, her family takes such wonderful care of her (with a free pun!)
I think this is one of your best ,if not THE best strip that you have created. Who among us hasn’t felt betrayed by misjudgement and preconceptions. A little compassion can work wonders!
This is such a sweet and funny strip! I got misty eyed for poor little Floof, and loved Stella and Shawm cheering her up with kisses and a great pun! A great way to commemorate the day (and maybe lay a few stupidstitions to rest!) Thank you, Nancy!
I had a solid black cat named Wiz. (Her name from the shelter was Liz.) She was exactly like any other color cat, a domestic short hair. She was very affectionate and lived a long, full life. I miss her.
Aw, Floof, you are NOT a black cat, dear one. You are a TUXEDO cat – anyone can see your lovely white bib and tucker, plus the elegant white gloves. Sweet Floof is dressed to the nines!
Plus, my path has been crossed by black beasts often over the years; most of them brought nothing but love and joy … even now, my current avatar makes me smile. Conan (the German Shepherd) crossed the Rainbow Bridge many years ago and Akiro (that obstreperous kitten) is now a grand old man (but still obstreperous … between naps).
I was so lucky to have my black cats! The boy was the sweetest cat I’ve ever known, always a perfect gentleman. The girl came along over many years later, after having been ejected (in one way or another) from four other homes. She was, shall we say “difficult.” She was also incredibly intelligent and, after she finally (after months) learned to trust me (and stopped biting and scratching), the most affectionate cat I’ve ever encountered.
You’d think that the bubonic plague would’ve convinced the world about the stupidity and self-destructive results of superstition.
For those unfamiliar, the plague was spread by fleas and the rats that carried them. Religious superstition convinced the people that since cats are the Devil’s familiar, they had to be the cause. So cats were slaughtered by the millions. Which led to a population explosion among the rats, making the plague far worse than it would otherwise have been, decimating the entire population of Europe.
My favorite of our clowder was Widget, the big black boy. We rushed out and got (rescued) him as a companion for our seriously traumatized Siamese kitten. He was a good brother, and grew into a big black creampuff, massive and powerful and wouldn’t hurt a fly…
Beautiful family grup support action. Superstition is stupidity. I have never understood how someone can think that of a cat or anything else. The phrase reminds me of the Donald Duck short, Donald’s Lucky Day.

FACT: I have two black cats who are wonderful.
FACT: I have an orange tabby cat that is chaos.
FACT: If I see a sad Floof, it makes me sad – no more, please.

Don’t let the cat cross your path, until you give them a scratch or two.

I have found that Friday the 13th is a good day for me. Could it be because my father was born on Friday the 13th.

Oh! Poor Floof! Glad Stella, Shawm, and Sirus were there to make it better. Black cats DO face stigma.
