A petard was a bomb or explosive device, used to force access to a castle or fortified position. Thus, “Hoist by one’s own petard” means blown up by one’s own bomb, or more generally, as in this case, injured by one’s own cleverness.

‘Pétard’ means ‘firework’ in French. If I didn’t speak French, I would never have understood this comment! Had no idea it was an English word too …
