Spent 20yrs working a rotating shift, it was a standing order throughout the mill with all my coworkers, friends and family were not to provide any gifts to our kids that made noise! Surprisingly, it was a rule well heeded.
Ridiculous! Silly even for a “Herman” cartoon! If you have kids that age, you DO NOT expect to sleep in on Christmas morning! The very idea is preposterous. Hummph. (—
My brother has a mean streak … He would always make sure to provide his grand children with noisy toys. I recall our later father saying, sarcastically, “Thanks, B%@*” during a large family gather at our parents home … Merry Christmas! … ;)
I’d like to have received any of the actual toys depicted in the 1966 version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Some of those would have been fun even after I reached the age where Christmas became the best work holiday of the year.
When I was a boy in the sixties, my younger cousin had a drum. When he banged it, sometimes his dad would say, “Go get my pocket knife. I’ll check inside and see what makes that noise.”

My sister, bless her evil little heart, gave my two sons drums for Christmas. You don’t know the joy of hearing “Jingle Bells” being played on a drum.

I used to threaten to give drum sets to appropriate people. When their kids already thought everything was a drum, it seemed reasonable
