Depending on how the tip structure is set up, they sometimes lose. I had a son who worked as waitstaff and he did well, but he also got stiffed a lot more than people realize. So I tend to over tip (I can afford it) to make up for these slugs.
Also we have some places in town where the food is relatively cheap. Just because the food is cheap, it doesn’t mean that the service is.
