Interestingly enough, the term “baby sitter” only first appeared in 1937, so Shannon may be onto something. In the times before then, the job Luann is working may have been done by a servant.
If you don’t like being stuck watching Shannon then maybe you should find yourself a real job, Luann. Or at least stop being such a doormat and start refusing requests for babysitting gigs you don’t want to do. Jonah keeps pawning his daughter off on everyone because everyone keeps letting him. People do what you let them get away with doing.
Boy people sure love to hate on Luann for totally silly reasons, but I think this foible Sunday comic is funny and I agree Shannon is getting bigger. In a way she is growing at the same pace that Luann did as a grade school kid, although of course Shannon is a recurring character whose story is included in Toni’s, and her selfish non-parent (another non-parent) Toni’s brother Jonah. Shannon says sharp, insightful things as smart kids will, but is not a brat. Just smart, and willful. Nice to see her, although all the time would be aggravating.
Time for Greg to give Shannon a bit more maturity since everyone else in the strip has. Except of course Jonah, and he’s just plain irresponsible and some people just never mature out of that.
All children this age need to be taken care of. Most parents love their kids very much, but get tired and annoyed of always cleaning up after them. I’m sure Luann enjoys spending time with Shannon.
Calling the job, ‘babysitting’ meant that the parental units did not have to pay all that much, for the amount of work involved. If they called it, ‘servant,’ there is a minimum wage required.
LUANN!: If you think the anti Luann comments here are hateful, you should see the ones on ArcaMax. There is a refugee from that site who now posts here (don’t know why he left; that place obviously had many more posters who share his hatred of Luann). I used to ask why they bothered to read something with a character they hate. Some said it was because they liked the other characters, but one, who usually posts using a screen name related to events in the Middle East, admitted that he was there to get those who like the character upset.
Luann is looking tired and depressed. What titular comic strip character wouldn’t when relegated to second-string Sundays-only work in what is nominally her own strip?!
I think it hasn’t been stated if Brad & Toni are paying Luann for babysitting. Two divergent points of view come to mind. Some would say that anyone who is family should always pitch in when needed – without pay. On the other hand, Brad & Toni both have good paying jobs and should be able to afford to give Luann something for her help. Brad & Toni seem frugal and they are saving for a house. That isn’t enough reason to not pay Luann.

Calvin would call baby-sitting a monstrosity. (Sure, Shannon, let’s call a baby-sitter a servant.)

In this instance, Shannon is right on.

Way back when England ruled the world, rich people hired ‘nannies’ to take care of their kids. Wonder why that word disappeared?

Shannon’s t-shirt looks like the original commemorative shirts sold to raise funds for the survivors of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando…

Tiff’s off on a dramatic plot and the “star” of the strip is in banal city.

Is she “sitting” for Jonah or Brad?

Don’t think I’ve seen Luann and Shannon interacting with each other very often here.

So Jonah parks the kid with Brad and Toni, and instead of saying “no” when they’re busy, they have Luann babysit?
