A well-intended action without understanding seldom achieves its goal. My beloved Shannon is well-intended without understanding. At least her heart is in the right place, now if she can just gain understanding apart from indoctrination, progress is possible.

As an offspring of a schizophrenic mother and alcoholic father, I have little tolerance for ineffective action. It takes the place of doing something – anything – useful. In the public setting it is no better, squandering our resources for something that is beyond our control. We have a history of doing just that; the eugenics era (roughly 1890 to 1945) resulted in the forced sterilization of tens of thousands of American women and the California law was only slightly modified to form the original Nazi eugenics law. For all that, serious biologists knew since 1900, when Mendel’s “Experiments on Plant Hybridization” surfaced, that eugenics could not work unless the breeding population was reduced to one pair. In carbon reduction nobody claims to have a solution, only things that will shift the timeline slightly at staggering cost. (BTW, forced sterilization is still legal in the US, thanks to the US Supreme Court decision Buck v. Bell. Our follies tend to haunt us.)

Shannon is barely beyond worrying about diaper change, much less world change, and I’m too old to join any crusades, so let’s take Puddles back to the dog park and be satisfied with cleaning up any dog poop from the environment.

Look, my analytical and idealistic comrades in cartoons, Greg is having enough trouble trying to create a sorta’ normal boy-girl romantic relationship, please don’t expect him to cure the troubles of the world, too. Make comics fun again, we have enough editorial cartoonists.

I guess it never occurred to any of the ‘climate-change-is-a-big-lie’ types who seem to hang out at GoComic that the Evanses intended this particular ‘toon to be an honest-to-gXd JOKE…Why else have a kid talk about fixing ’goball’ warming with ice cubes and an aerosol can of air freshener?

@Schrodinger’s Dog: Considering all the wildfires that have been happening in California, I’ve been surprised that none of that has shown up as real drama in this ‘toon yet. So I’m hoping for an episode at the firehouse, where either Brad or Toni’s squad is sent out to fight fires and danger is everywhere. Who knows; maybe one of the wildfires will jump a fire break, and burn down the guesthouse in Al Gray and Irma Berger’s backyard?

Luann and Bern look like they are sitting at a desk. It must be a scene with Luann watching over Shannon at her place, though it doesn’t look home like. That said, Shannon has a lot of imagination and always seems capable of entertaining herself. She’s not the kind of kid who says ‘I’m bored. I don’t have anything to do.."

There they are: Two girls at the end of the counter, in their prime. Well, Luann is showing some potential, but poor, old-before-her-time, Bernice looks like she is suffering from a severe estrogen deficiency. Come on, Bernice, Shannon is showing more skin than you are. I figured that after Margo Phelps, aka Mrs. Fogarty, Greg should have thrown away the mold. Nope.
