The presence of duck tape on critical parts of a carnival ride is a big “red flag”.

Some people got trapped upside down on a roller coaster ride for hours.

Did he curl the end of the hanger piece to ensure it stays in place? If so, we’re carny-good.

Cotter pin, coat hanger or a bent nail…should be OK.

The carny operator has the proper “uniform” on, so he is good to know what is happening with his equipment. Happy Labor Day!

Ten days without a fatal accident. It’s all good.

    Well, almost ten days.

I used to go fishing with the Krimple brothers, masters of baling wire, coat hanger, and various irrigation parts to fix boat props and trailer hitches. Ah, good times. Where are they now, I wonder. Oh yeah, one is in jail , the other is making a living fixing McDonalds ice cream machines.

Lived in Western Oklahoma back in ‘68. They hosted a “Tri state” high school band festival each year, hundreds of bands in town…the square turned into a complete carnival of fair rides. There was a ride called “the hammer”. A long arm with a passenger pod on each end that would spin at high speed. In the process of loading a slightly oversize young lady it “took off” when she was only partially in. The operator stopped it at the top of the arc with her hanging out kicking her legs and screaming her lungs out as a 1,000 people swarmed to the ride. Being on the courthouse lawn packed in with the other rides, there was no way to get a firetruck in to rescue, and a 40’ ladder was both slightly too short and really not suited to rescue someone who was beyong hysterical. The operator was a 14 year old runaway wearing a filthy wifebeater with ducktail mullet and reform school tatoos. He pushed aside the EMTs and pulled the control panel cover off. “I can back it down”. The adults froze and he pulled sparking wires off bare handed, and reattached two wires. The ride groaned and slowly backed safely down. I hope he went on to greater things…he earned it that day.
