A strange light and a strange shadow fell across the face of the woman, the troubled woman. Time is out of joint: Things fall apart; the center cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.
Today’s effort is sort of confusing to me. Is Aunt Fritzi upset in the end that Nancy wants to stay home and study? Is she psyching Nancy out to make her go have fun with her friends? Is Aunt Fritzi zombified because she is so shocked and disbelieving that Nancy wants to study? Is Aunt Fritzi attempting to show Nancy that she is the actress in the scary movie?
Unfortunately, this is one of the first of the New Nancy that I am not quite getting.
This is my third attempt to leave this comment. I think I accidentally deleted it once and the second iteration vanished while I was proof reading it. I wasn’t even touching the computer or keyboard!
But… I love this final panel. I go elsewhere on or off the internet, and it keeps bumping up against the inside of my skull. I keep coming back to gaze at it. Here’s what I think is mesmerizing me… This is something new under the sun, though Ecclesiastes tells us that there is nothing new under the sun. I mean, it’s utterly unlike any image in the 85 year history of Nancy. Even so, it fits right in, perfectly, like a lost jigsaw piece found at last. It’s from out of the Nancyverse, but it belongs here.
I am going to do something I’ve long contemplated. I’m going to download multiple panels from Nancy onto card stock and create a deck for playing Five Card Nancy, the game invented by Scott McCloud, peace be upon him. This panel will be something of a Joker, a trump all, a wild card.
With so many folks really appreciating today’s effort…. even some folks who are generally less Nancy friendly….. please help me out here:
I do not seem to “get” this one today. I usually really enjoy all of Oliva’s efforts. But, somehow this one is confusing to me. I have read the other comments and still do not seem to get it. Someone, please explain it to this old imbecile.
A rather simple bit of funny business here. With the poster as foreshadowing or being Checkov’s gun trope. A horrifying reaction to Nancy asking Fritzi to keep her studying is way out of the way behavior. Such a bizarre reaction is also a comedy trope. I found it funny. Well done again Ms J!

Again, I like this, and again nobody paid me to say that…

So is Aunt Fritzi secretly appearing in that horror flic?

Someone ought to get a somewhat larger print of this strip, then put googly eyes on the poster in the first frame and on Aunt Fritzi in the third….

It’s not the learning that attracts Nancy, but the excuse. Still, her aunt doesn’t know that, and is terrified!

Bride of Frankenstein highlights in Fritzi’s hair would have been fun.

What did you do with my niece?

I’m just now noticing that Fritzi has the same face and expression as the woman in the poster.

And while I’m at it, note the sequences of THREE bricks slightly darker than the rest of the wall in panel one.

I’m getting a strong Michael Kupperman vibe off Fritzi in panel 3. Are we building toward a Nancy/Snake’n’Bacon crossover event…?
